Because he is such a damn good songwriter!
I know that for some people it's tough to see past his, admittedly rough, performances -- both vocally and instrumentally. (Personally, I happen to love it, but see why one wouldn't.)

So, for those of you still learning to love Danny (and fans alike), I'll present you with

Guster's version of "The Sun Shines Down On Me"

It's from the Daniel Johnston Tribute record, which is REALLY worth picking up. Also features, Clem Snide, Tom Waits, Eels, TV On the Radio, Flaming Lips, Mercury Rev, and lotsa other great performances. This one just happens to be my favorite from the bunch.

Enjoy.

I second this. A friend gave me this disc a few months ago and I wasn't terribly interested (Freedy Johnston? No, Daniel Johnston? Whothehell...?). After accidentally listening to it one day (thanks, shuffle), I pull it out once a week or so. The Mercury Rev, Teenage Fanclub and Gordon Gano songs are favorites.

Got this, love it, but for some reason always forget that I have it and it goes ignored. I actually pulled it out to take to work today. I guess we all must have stumbled on the same story about the film opening this weekend (not here, of course, dammit.) Can't wait to see it - but I bet it'll be on DVD.

I love the hell out of Rejected Unknown. That's an album that transcends the novelty that some might assign to a guy like this. It's just full of great songs, period.

The tribute disc is the only one I own, though I really want to pick up The Early Recordings, Vol. 1.

My friend saw the documentary last year at the Toronto Film Festival and said it was amazing and it made her love him ten times more than she did originally. So I'm really hoping it's playing around here somewhere. But that's really doubtful in this city.

Also, as much as I don't want it to be, I think the Bright Eyes song is my favorite track off the tribute disc. I think it's the drums that do it. Adding drums to 'Devil Town' kicks a great song up another notch.

Is there a website that will let you search by movie and tell you where it's playing, if at all, near you?

I tried the specific websites for AMC and Famous Players and all they told me was that it's not playing in this city.

I am going to go see The Devil and Daniel Johnston here in Austin at the Alamo Drafthouse in May . . . could it possibly get any more A-TX than watching a film about DJ at the Alamo Drafthouse? I think not.

So, is The Devil and Daniel Johnston pretty good? Just wondering because it is out here in Houston and I was thinking of seeing it.
