Newer stuff? That Ray LaMontange record is pretty good, but Otis kicks his ass from the grave. Some folks dig that Jamie Cullum stuff.

The recent Solomon Burke records are good.

This is hard - a lot falls into R. Kelly stuff or into Starbucks meh. Damn, where Terence Trent D'Arby when you need him?

William Bell

He's not exactly soul, but I would also recommend Tony Joe White.

np: Tony Joe White, "Willie & Laura Mae Jones"

I love Betty Lavette's last record...

other than that I pretty much stick to northern soul compilations, sam cooke, otis redding, and some motown comps.

Although I like the ones I listed, I've got to ask why you want contemporary recommendations? Soul from the 60's and 70's blows away even the best of today's soul artists, and I can't believe that you have everything worth owning from the 60's and 70's...dig deeper.

dig it.. same answer if anyone asks about blues and jazz.

Anyhow, how about Syl Johnson ? (cotton had a song on his on a mix he had online to DL.)

EDIT: Ok Im off line for a while so I will just post the link:

Syl Johnson- I Hate I Walked Away

.

the man speaks the truth. If that song doesn't floor you then you are made of wood.

Ditto on the Lavette and Solomon Burke's most recent, though they're both pretty old school folks.

Been on a bit of a soul kick lately....been listening to the Stax/Volt collection and Sam Cooke.

Also gotta mention the Impressions (Curtis Mayfield's old group), the Delphonics (that cool soul track oin the movie Jackie Brown was them), and how about some love for Etta James.

Neo soul always makes me happy too...love Erykah Badu and Maxwell in particular.

I don't remember anyone around here being thrilled with it, but that Common from last year, despite really being a rap/hip-hop record had a nice old soul vibe to my ears that I liked.
