I was under the impression last night that those mafioso characters broke his legs, hence the chair earlier. But then waasn't it a disease or some shit?

I'm betting on MS. It's one of the few CNS diseases that you get relapsing and remitting symptoms.

I think he said he died. But he never said what he did with the body.

I don't think they've implied anything about how he was in a wheelchair. I thought he was hit by a car initially, but that was just my imagination. The way they're dragging it out, there's got to be more to it.

And the map.

"Alleged location of the flame, but unlikely due to Cerberus activity"

If they encounter a three-headed dog in the jungle, then they're just grasping for shock value.

I'm glad you gained SOMETHING out of that movie, other than an utter hatred of Sam Neill

why did I already know that?

There were like 3 movies exactly like this that came out at the same time. The one with Sam Neill, therefore, is the crappy one. Didn't you ever take physics?

This has nothing to do with last week's episode and I am sure it was discussed pages ago, but why is it that the black cloud has only been in one episode, what the fuck was it, and why don't crackhead and big african guy talk about it?

It was the "monster" that killed the pilot back in the day, right?

It seems to be really sporadic in appearance. And when it does show up, or is heard off in the forest, it doesn't seem to be a signal of anything or tie into any other happenstance.

I'm all for mystery and surprises and stuff but there's just far too many at this point. They need to tie up a couple loose ends, at least.

It's been in several episodes now. Once we knew what it was, some fans found out that we'd seen it in the pilot (it swoops out of the sky and destroys one of the still-intact engines early in the episode.) Locke encountered it in the jungle, as well - but we didn't actually see, just his reaction to it (it was the thing he said was "the heart of the island, and it is beautiful.") We then saw Locke get attacked by it and dragged some distance. And then we saw Eko's encounter (as you note.)

The creators of the show deny that it's a cloud of nanobots, but it's possible that they're being very specific about what it's not, because it could be a smartdust cloud instead - very similar, but not quite the same. (Wikipedia links to this article where Damon Lindelof said, "'Of course,' he added, 'that depends on how you define "nanobot".'")

yeah, the ship is the black rock.

i'm guessing hanso created the cloud - i think they were studying something else on the island, or just choice the island for nefarious research because it's secluded.

really, how long is it before they discover some macabre Nazi regime experiment that took place on the island in the 40s?

my favorite part about Black Rock is that guy that blew the fuck up. BEST EPISODE EVER.

I remember reading a thread about this last season. The thing that swoops down from the sky and hits the engine was apparently removed when the episode was rerun. People were suggesting that it was just something left over from the sfx people.

The thing didn't really look like the cloud of dust, from what I remember.

Really? That's interesting . . . it really did look to me like an intentional, but almost unnoticeable thing. I got the feeling it was supposed to be viewed as a minor error at the time, but would be something fans would look back on and realize that they'd seen their first glimpse of this bizarre island's security system. I kind of wonder if maybe they decided they didn't want to set up a precedent with this appearance and removed it to prevent further complications in later episodes and seasons?

So they buried Hanso at the slave ship?

Most of this stuff started back in the early '80s?

Oh, and... "There are dragons here"???

Goddamn.
