Boarders familiar with Mac and photoshop: I'm trying to resize an image to fit into Haq's size constraints for avatars. I went into the "Image Size" tool and cut the image size down to 19k, but the image size and file size didn't correlate. When I tried to upload the image as my avatar, the file size was still 86k. The only way I could get the file size down was to cut the image size down to like 6w x 9h pixels and the pic size was something like 168 bytes, but the file size was still 64k.

Basically, how do I actually cut down the file size without severely decreasing the photo quality? Thanks in advance for help.

you can't use photoshop. it adds to many little icons and previews. it would be better if you used graphic converter-it's easier too. If you can't find it PM me and I can hook you up.

I don't know what you've done, so keep that in mind. Not trying to be condescending, just thorough.

Image > Image Size. Under "Document Settings", make sure you are at 72 dpi. I don't know where this image originated, so it may have more resolution than you need.

I usually take my image I want, then create a new document at the specific size for avatars (is that 120x120?). I drag the original image into the blank Avatar Size canvas, then use Free Transform (Cmd+T) to resize it to fit the box (hold shift to constrain proportions so it doesn't distort).

Once it fits all nice, go to File > Save For Web... and a new dialog box with a preview will pop up. If it's a photograph, save as a jpeg, and under the bottom left corner of the picture it will tell you what the file size is. If it's too big, use the Quality Slider on the right to get it within range. I don't think I've ever had to go below 60 for anything. As you adjust, it will preview how garbled it makes the image right there in that window.

Or if you want, just PM it over. I'm working right now as it is.

really at this point, the only thing you should be using gifs for are animations. otherwise, use png.

I have this full page newspaper ad that should have been done, ohhhh probably a month ago.

I have the back slider open and Crooked Fingers on pretty loud.

Unless you use photoshop's "save for web" mode, the "save as" function in Photoshop adds a lot of unneeded data to a file. Some of which is metadata, previews an d icons. these all add up to the final file size. I think that normally Photoshop embeds three different size icons or previews to each file saved. a 32x32 pixel icon, and two larger ones for previews during the open command in Photoshop and the Browser finction in Photoshop.

The "save for web" feature has the ability to aviod these and reduce the file size. But imo, Graphic Converter is such an easier and faster program to accomplish this that it makes photoshop kind of cumbersome by comparison. It's kind of a right tool for the right application I suppose. Not that you can't do it but what is faster, easier and more efficient. Besides, Graphic converter is free– not everybody has Photoshop or needs it.
