I am adding Donal Fagen. Much, much better than I had hoped, and I had high hopes.

Destroyers.... I hear Prefab Sprout all through this...

At the risk of infuriating Dri, I've gotta give a major thumbs-down to that new Built To Spill, as it's nothing but wall-to-wall mind-numbing wankery. Now, I did like the new TVOTR much better, and imagine it will be a grower like their first album was.

hmmm...I didn't like the one destroyer song from the new one that I've heard but love some prefab sprout unless you're saying the whole thing reminds you of farmyard cat.

I'll give it a few more spins, but my first impression is there's a lot of guitar playing for the sake of guitar playing (if that makes any sense).

1. Band of Horses
2. Neko Case
3. Mono
4. Mogwai
5. The Appleseed Cast

NOTE: Built to Spill did not even make the list. I am with you so far FT. It has been completely uninteresting for me. However, as happened with their previous three albums, it took me a long time and repetetive listens to really get into all the subtle things. I think at first, to most, they kind of just sound like a lot of noise. But, for me, after many listens I start noticing all the things that make them a much enjoyed band by me...if that makes any sense.

That's certainly plausible, and such potential (however remote) is why I will keep listening a few more times.

Good lord this is a great album. Maybe the demise of Polyamory will turn out to be a good thing as apparently dude decided to focus on this record and not get sidetracked putting out 10 cassettes a month. Easily my favorite this year thus far.

I am mostly still catching up from last year, so my 2006 records have been limited. But of what I own or have heard,

The Awsome:
Appleseed Cast "Peregrine" (hypnotizing)
Neko Case "...Fox Confessor" (that voice, those songs)
Band of Horses "Everything all the time" (not original, but damn the songs kick ass)

The Good:
Islands "Return to the Sea" (a lot of fun - the postmodern Graceland)
Belle and Sebastian "Life pursuit" (enjoyable as always)
Art Brut "Bang, Bang Rock and Roll" (again, a lot of fun...very addictive)
Mogwai "Mr. Beast" (best in since ep+2)

The Bad:
Flaming Lips "AWWTM" (hard pressed to find 2 songs that I can listen to all the way through - and I LOVE the lips)
Elbow "Leaders of the Free World" (see above)
