My wife and I love them as well - seeing them twice here in Seattle on Tuesday - once at a KEXP 500 club event in the afternoon at The Triple Door and then later that night at The Showbox.

I was at the Triple Door show on Tuesday. It was the first I'd heard them and I thought it was a good show. The show is in the KEXP archives 4/11/06 4:00 PM.

Damn Geoduck - wish we'd corresponded more about it - My wife and I were at the Triple Door show yesterday as well, and went to the show last night at the Showbox. It is always fun to meet fellow Obners.
Even though we already had the new album we bought the UK version which comes with a DVD and that got us a stamp to meet the band after the show....was a lot of fun - wasn't the typical line-up and sign autograph thing - the band members were just walking around and talking to everybody and we must have spent like another hour at the club talking with them - really a bunch of nice, fascinating guys - My wife and I were already huge fans before all of this but this may have propelled them into favorite band status.

How long did they play? I'm seeing them tonight. How is the opener?

Dana, My wife and I figure that they played for a little longer than an hour.

As for the opener - It is a guy named Richard Swift and his band - The guys in Elbow absolutely loved them, but they really weren't our(my wife and I) cup of tea. They do have a myspace page that you can listen to a couple of songs on: http://www.myspace.com/richardswift

thanks... yeah, I can tell my husband won't be going for this, however, I do kinda like the first song on the myspace page, in a sing-songy, mid-70s FM radio kinda way. :)

Did Elbow perform any songs from their first album? I'd love to hear "Bitten by the Tailfly" again....

They DID perform a couple of songs from the first album but alas no "Bitten by the Tailfly" - They played "Red" as like the 2nd or 3rd song in the set, and then ended the first set with "Newborn" - then they played "Powder Blue" during the encore.

Who knows though, maybe if you yell loud enough they will play "Bitten" ;)~

My wife and I actually kicked around the idea of heading to the PDX show tonight(we'll be at my parent's north of McMinnville this weekend). Neither of us are working right now, but we've both got interviews scheduled for the next couple of days and that wouldn't be the responsible thing to do. :(

Have fun!

oh my god, SUCH a good show last night... this was the first time I'd seen them since 2001, so I was hoping they could still bring it live, and bring it they did! I grabbed a setlist, and here's what they played (alas, no "Bitten by the Tailfly"):

Station Approach
Red
Leaders of the Free World
Great Expectations
Fugitive Motel
Mexican Stand-off
The Good Day
McGregor
Switching Off
Forget Myself
encore:
Puncture Repair
The Stops
Newborn

The Portland crowd seemed very into it (except for the typical yakking bar crowd in the back). One funny moment: Guy was introducing "The Stops" and saying how it was about "loving someone is often not enough." And some guy in the crowd said, "Try anal!" That got the band and the crowd laughing.

Why aren't these guys more well-known? They're simply an amazing band.

I like Richard Swift -- not earbending stuff, but nice to listen to.

Your thoughts on Richard are pretty much the same as mine Dana, musically the guy and his band are obviously really talented - none of the songs really grabbed me though :(

Sometimes it is really tough to be an openning band - but it really sounds like the guys in Elbow really like them and are going to go out of their way to help them :)

As for why Elbow isn't more well known - I don't understand either - I really think that they will become bigger with word of mouth though - I was shocked that Geoduck hadn't really heard them before as they have had 2 other great albums prior to this one.

Yes, Guy and Craig from Elbow actually stood in the crowd for most of Richard's set, and Guy was definitely singing his praises on stage last night. Richard and his band actually got a resounding approval from the Portland crowd.

I think the band was genuinely pleased with the warm response from the Portlanders though. Wayne, their tech, kept coming out on stage, switching out guitars and whatnot, and it got to the point where people would yell out "Wayne!" when he came out. Guy said that everyone should have a Wayne in their life, and one guy said he did. Guy then retorted with, "Well, my Wayne is better than your Wayne.... although he is a little good-looking for my tastes."

I thought about picking up the dvd set, but I didn't have any cash on me. Probably a mistake.
