Overall, I think it's a damn good collection of songs (if I do say so myself).
BUT, if I could change a few things about it, these would be those:
1. Mastering -- the damn thing would be LOUDER
2. Track order would be slightly different in the middle, the first half of "Side 2" would go:
- Suckers
- I Do
- And To Think...
(it just makes more sense and "Suckers would be a strong way to come out of the acoustic "False Start")
speaking of which...
3. "False Start" would be transposed to a different key, or maybe a lower octave. I can hear myself straining and it really bothers me.
4. "Bound To Fail" -- I would've stuck to my guns about rapidly panning the 2 guitar solos. I WANTED it to be disorenting, damnit! (You know what I mean, Matt.)
5. "Miles From Monday" -- would have dug up some more money to pay for additional sessions to thicken up the mix with additional instruments. It's a good song and this is a decent version, but it deserves better.
6. "Suckers" -- Matt, you would've played that final melody on the goddamn Moog.
That is all.
Like I said, I am still proud of this record. It is an excellent collection of songs, if I may pat myself on the back for the moment. But it was also a learning experience.
Don't think that anyone besides me and Matt will care about this post, but I wanted to get it off my chest. Thanks.
I'm going to respond because I told you I'd give you a detailed opinion/review and never did. Sorry, man.
This album did grow on me, and I really like it a lot. I think my favorite is "Miles From Monday" and I just used it on my year-end comp. I think you're right, though - additional instruments could have made it a bit better, but I still think it's great the way it was done. It's definitely a great collection of songs, and I'm jealous. If I were you, I'd pat myself on the back too.
Now I'll play music critic. Overall, I find the piano to be a bit too much. I'm not sure if there's too much of it, or if it's just mixed too high. The playing is great, but on at least one of the songs I find myself wishing it weren't there (but there's one song I think it works perfectly - can't remember which, and I'm at work, so I can't listen to it).
As much as I like "Cary's Here" and think it's a wonderful song to your child (at least I'm assuming it is), it feels a bit out of place to me. I'm not sure why - maybe it's not as "mature" as the other songs or something.
Again, a very fine effort there, Todd. I'm glad I bought the CD and if you guys release another, I'll buy it.
