Those eTrade ads featuring Jefferson Airplane's "Volunteers," which is probably one of the most anti-establishment songs ever written.

I'm pretty sure if you allowed Paul Kantner to gaze into a crystal ball back in '69 and showed him what would become of his revolutionary anthem more than three decades later, he would have taken his own life right there on the spot.

Of course, today he needs the cash, so the only revolution he cares about now is the revolving door into his bank.

How about Ford using some knock-off version of "You Really Got Me", which, if memory serves, was the same song that appeared in the badass Nissan commercials where GI Joe scoops up Barbie from a few years back.

I noticed in some other car commercial they were using a knock off of a motley crue riff. I forget which song or what car company it was though.

In Canada there was a commercial for McCain's rising crust pizza that used the Parachute Club's "Rise Up", which was also written as a revolutionary anthem. They sued, but since they had sold their rights to the song I don't think they were successful.

I like the Cadillac/Led Zep one, cuz I hate Cadillac and Led Zep, so it gives me double the pleasure to turn off the telly.

I gotta say Wrangler using "fortunate son" is disturbing, especially since they try to make it seem as if its an American appreciation anthem.

Also the Phillips' use of "Getting Better" but leaving out the "can't get no worse" has always left a bad taste in my mouth

One that's bugging me these days: using "There She Goes," a song about heroin, to sell birth control. What the...?

McCain's corporate headquarters are near where I live. I interviewed one of the executives about a plant expansion a while back and happened to mention that song.

His response: "Yeah, that wasn't my decision. A gay anthem used for pizza crust is kind of weird, isn't it? Oh, don't use that response in your story, okay? "

It's not so much incongruous, but's HP's usage of "Picturebook" in all those commercials is really annoying. I hope they go away soon.

I'm sure I heard This Corrosion used in a dish detergent add once. Or maybe it was laundry (and no, it def. didn't include a promise to make your blacks blacker and your bloodstains permanent).

Easily: "London Calling" in Jaguar commercials.

Joe Strummer: "Yeah, I agreed to that. We get hundreds of requests for that and turn 'em all down. But I just thought Jaguar...yeah. If you're in a group and you make it together, then everyone deserves something. Especially twenty-odd years after the fact. It just seems churlish for a writer to refuse to have their music used on an advert and so I figured out, only advertise the things you think are cool."
