I'm wondering if there are actually people that do this. I mean, I'm sure there are superrich people that live in sweet apartments in Manhattan that do but actual normal people? It's ludicrous.

It just pisses me off that I can't read Maureen Dowd at all if I don't actually buy the freaking newspaper which is pretty difficult in Aix en freaking Provence.

I'm just waiting for the day when they make the whole website TimesSelect...then I'll really be posting some serious shit.

I have considered it, I like Friedman and that other Jew better than Dowd, but you're right, it's fucking annoying.

The thing to do, cman, is get a Sunday only subscription to the actual paper, and then you get Select free being a subscriber. I think I will do that at some point, but my budget is stretched right now.

I'm actually thinking about calling my neighbors in the states who subscribe daily and seeing if they'd be willing to give me their Delivery Reg Number so that I can access this stuff online. They probably wouldn't care and I don't they're even the kind of people that ever use the online version.

It would also be huge in terms of research potential. I can't tell you how many times I've come across Times articles that would be so useful for teaching English class here only to discover that they are blocked off.

That's my big deal as well...there are several issues that I monitor on a daily basis, and oftentimes the first or second google link is The Times...

I oughta call a friend who still works in PR and see if he has one

(and if this works out, I'll see if I can't pass it along to you)

I'd be much obliged. If I get my neighbors to give me theirs, likewise.

Yep. This is what I do. Although, not because I wanted the Select thing, though that's a nice add-on. Where would I be without my Sunday Times?

serious question: do you ever use icerocket.com as a blogsearch engine? i only mention it because mark cuban's always talking about using it (and owning it, probably) to track that very thing.

Worst marketing decision ever.

Time Select made NYT columnists pretty much irrelevant in the blog world which is a shame because that helped drive advertising dollars.

On a related note, noticed the NYT laid off over 100 folks in the past couple of weeks. Good job!

It's the principle... speaks of elitism at worst and misjudging the market at best. When subscriber rate drops like the NYT's has this past year not to mention op-eds are silenced unless you spend $, heads should roll at this point. My money is that the NYT will change this policy in the next 12 months.

i'm not exactly conservative in my politics or anything, but the concept that a news outlet has to give you content for free just because you prefer it doesn't make a whole lot of sense.
