Saw the DK's (sans Jello Biafra) in Santa Cruz, CA last Friday night. This was $19 well spent.

Despite the under-21 crowd made up of too many punk kids and little room at the bar enclosure I thoroughly enjoyed the stumbling, stage-diving and shrieking antics. I have to admit to being a bit of a wus and opting for the standing room balcony over the circulating and ever expanding mosh pit. I was shoved in the back one too many times, fled to the bar and realized that the bar extended upstairs. The sound was better and the arial view of the circulating mosh numbskulls was much more entertaining from above than from ground level. I have a low tolerance for being repeatedly punched in the head.

Jeff Penalty filled Jello's front-man shoes admirably, performing with enough passion and lust to make you believe he was the man. East Bay Ray's guitar licks were spot on and sizzling. Klaus Flouride on bass guitar and falsetto vocals shares my 40-something physique and looks a lot less punky than the first time I saw the DK's opening for The Clash in 79 or 80. D.H. Peligro is a huge dude who just pounds the shit of his drum kit. The guy has some serious guns after 30 years of working out behind the DK's, the Chili Peppers and recently Nailbomb.

Most notable moments of the night:
- The sing along favorites "Too Drunk to Fuck", "Kill The Poor"
- Covering Outkast's "Hey Ya" for the encore
- The fat chick stage diving and nobody catching her

I don't see how it's posible to find a person who sounds enough like Jello to pass as Jello.

His Fred Schneider as Johnny Rotten mix of nebbishness and aggression is pretty unique vocally.

They cancelled their gigs here due to lack of ticket sales. I probably wouldn't go to see them without Jello but what a great band.

Plastic Surgery Disaster should be in every Punk Top Ten and never is.

Listening to live albums and bootlegs I was surprised to hear what an amazing guitarist East Bay Ray was.

Glad you had a good time, but I probably wouldn't see the DK's without Jello.

real indication that it wasn't really DK.

How so? They did 'Viva Las Vegas' and 'Raw Hide' back in the day.

I don't consider them to be the DKs without Jello.

I thought Butchpatrickeddiemunster was singing lead for the DKs these days. Or maybe it was Brandon Cruz from "The Courtship of Bill Bixby's Lifeless Corpse." I know it was ONE of those two!

EDIT: I forgot that I just decided I'm going to try and start including NP:s at the bottom of each post...old school.

np: GBV - "Useless Inventions"

Also fine versions of both of the above.

We went to see this on a lark not expecting much but we had a good time laughing our asses off at the ridiculousness of the whole thing.

And the best version of "I Fought The Law" ever.
