I haven't heard of those other bands, but Murder By Death is fantastic .

I'm just gonna post a few recs, based upon some of your namedropping. These are all older bands, but maybe you haven't heard some of them:

13th Floor Elevators
The Left Banke

and several records from John Cale. In particular: Paris, 1919 and his collaboration with Brian Eno: Wrong Way Up.

I've been listening to Band of Horses and Belle and Sebastian almost nonstop lately.

yeah, what (apart from a horrible horrible name) IS wrong with MBD? i hadn't heard them before opening this thread, but they sound pretty good. certainly better than the screamo band i expected them to be.

The obvious answers (not all - or many - of which are actually endorsed by me):

Clap Your Hands Say Yeah
Wolf Parade
Tapes N Tapes
Modest Mouse
Built to Spill
Radar Bros.
Belle & Sebastian
Spoon
My Morning Jacket

Since I don't know what all you're already familiar with.

Nothing is wrong with MBD, at least that I'm aware of---I've never heard them. I just find it humorous when new posters slip a relatively unknown band into a list of well known acts and ask for RIYL's based on that list. That was my only point.

If I was asking for Indie bands, and all the other bands were Indie, why would I through in a screamo band? You are so narrow-minded, my elder and superior brother.

Apparently they aren't THAT unknown, considering basically everyone here except you has heard of them...

I don't listen to Grandaddy, Arcade Fire, Murder By Death, or the Unicorns but I'll still make some recommendations:

Mazarin
Augie March
Ambulance LTD
Kingsbury Manx
The Twin Atlas
Lilys
Brian Jonestown Massacre
The Pernice Brothers
Ghosty
Hip Whips
ermm...Elliott Smith!

I just want to say i wasn't kidding about www.cmj.com

www.cmj.com was cool when it first appeared on my radar, then started sucking when the main page was 88% ads and 15% content. www.cmj.com is a bit better now, and almost, almost a good replacement for the magazine, which I hope to get a subscription to soon, if possibly the folks at www.cmj.com give out free subs to people who put www.cmj.com in their posts a lot.

bort

np: www.cmj.com

also, in case there was any confusion, my reference to www.cmj.com was about the main site itself. the bulletin board (that we once called home) at www.cmj.com sucks now, and has sucked for quite some time, unfortunately.

No, read again. It sucked when there was 88% ads and 15% content.

Which would be 103% page. Good job being stupid

And I liked Wolf Parade, though I only got to listen to their cd about two times before my sister stole it... along with my Emery cd.... she's an evil one, let me tell you.
