i feel terrible when i do. it kind of ruins the satisfaction of not going into work because i feel so bad because they were relying on me.

It's the weirdest thing. I feel about bad phoning in sick for a couple of days and yet walking out at lunch time and never going back elicts no such guilty feelings.

I guess for me it has more to do with the dented pride of admitting I'm ill than any consideration for my actual employer.

i like to think that this is the time to call out. this is a silly job, nothing serious. to be honest i can't afford to call out with high gas prices and to buy the things i like and save for college and everything, but i'm going on a job hunt today and tomorrow, so i feel okay calling out.
but then i feel like i'm cheating. i called out of my current employer to find someone better.

Must be a regional nuance or something, but I've always called IN, not out.

we dont really have sick days so i cant really call out sick. if I feel sick I just work from home. or if I dont want to work I just have someone cover for me.

I've never called in sick or just said I didn't want to come in for the day, eventhough we have so many paid vacation days that I would really just use one of them.

I haven't even really taken a day off work so far this year, which is kind of odd for me. My first will prob be this Friday.

don't you work at like the gap or something where you schedule each week a week or two ahead of time?

I don't take any days off. Very rarely. In fact, HR informed me that I have to take 17 days by the end of the year otherwise I'll lose them.

To answer your question, I do feel guilty calling in so I just don't.

grocery store. schedule comes out roughly 1-2 days before sunday. schedules run from saturday-sunday so i never know if i have to work on sunday until friday or saturday.
granted, today is tuesday. but they've been forgetting to give me breaks, resulting in my only eating breakfast, or not eating meals at all on certain days. we aren't allowed to eat on register.
i don't usually eat breakfast but lately i've been eating large amounts of food because i know they won't give me a break to eat at all.
yesterday i had a cinnamon bun in the morning, and didn't eat again until 9:30 PM.

so i'm thinking i need a new job.
one that remembers that i'm human and need to eat.

I have a reputation for being one of the few people that never calls in sick, so I try not to feel too guilty.

I only call in to work when I have to go play a show, which is work. My principal knows, everyone knows, and I never miss any other days, and yet, I feel guilty about pretty much damn near everything in my life.

If it all wasn't my fault, i'd consider blaming my parents.

That's half joking there... but only half.

Sick days are awesome. Don't feel guilty: everyone is expendable.

I take a sick day when I want to blow off work. If I'm sick, I go to work. I'm rarely sick enough to actually have to take a day off of work.

I call in sick probably once every two months. It's always unplanned and works as a mechanism to give myself a mental health day.

I don't feel guilty because I know that #1, my work will be waiting for me when I return, and #2, I check my email from home and my boss knows that she can call me if she needs me (she never needs me). No one cares here anyway. Even our HR lady calls in at least one day a week.

Nope, I don't feel the slightest bit guilty about it. I earned my sick leave like I earned my vacation, and I'll never get a cash-out on my sick leave if I get laid off or quit like I would with my vacation hours. "Sick" to me equally means "ill" as "sick of work."

What's real fun is that my company advances us our days of vacation at the beginning of our fiscal year, but we earn our sick leave. In other words, they're hoping you'll use your vacation time if you get sick, because those days come out of employee's pockets, basically, where sick leave is on them. I wish they'd just lump it all together and say "take it as you please. Have fun."

Oh, and if we don't use our vacation time, we don't get a pay-out in cash on the remaining hours, nor are they rolled over for the next year's vacation. No, they turn into sick hours (which, again, we won't get paid out for if we were laid off or quit.) Sucks. I'd love to know how this is legal - if I earned my vacation hours, how come I don't get to keep the money they're worth?

I work directly under the publisher, who is a work horse and never takes off or calls in sick, so i avoid calling day of. If anything, I just submit an absence form a day or so before,

I have over 90 hours of sick time, so clearly I don't take off sick a lot. So when I do, mental health day or otherwise, I don't feel guilty about it... I've earned that time.

Sometimes.

I used to feel horribly guilty about it. Then my boss had to explain to me that I need to stop worrying about it.

I only call in sick if my son is ill or I'm really, really sick-which happened a few weeks ago and only because I dragged myself in with mild bronchitis after taking of a sick kid all week-my boss sent me home and told me not to come in the next day.

Luckily since I've been pregnant they're even more understanding since the two of em just had kids themselves in the last couple years.

Oh yeah, and we have no sick or vacation days here. So that part sucks.
