i'm in the initial stage of planning a 10days trip out to the mid-atlantic, and i'm thinking that the first's night stay will be in, "hello cleveland." the museum closes at 5:30. which would mean going the following am; which then cuts into my next day's driving time. if it's truly worth it, then we'll go. if not, then... so anyone?

opa! you'll be happy to know that i just ordered tix to the 5/28 brewers/phillies game @ philly .

I just got back from the RNRHOF, and I found my time well spent. It would have been better though if I'd had been my spray-can with me.... I so wanted to write JAIL over the black and white blow-ups of the Twins Glitter.

It was a bit underwhelming, but then that was when it was still very new. It might be awesome by now, but I'd warrant it's still just an overglorified hard rock cafe.

A 5:15 last call certainly isn't rock and roll in my book. Who runs that place? Pat Boone?!?

I agree with cotton in that the RNRHOF in many ways has become a glorified HR Cafe, but still, its cool to see the old Stones clothes, or Who guitars, etc. If you dig music, then you should make the trek at least once, much as I believe the baseball HOF is a mandatory trek for baseball fans. I say go for it. You might never get back to Cleveland.

I went there for an American Association of Museums conference party in '98. I thought it was "neat-ish" but not particularly didactic (I mean it is all sort of Rock 101 with tiny splatterings of punk and "alternative" rock thrown in but nothing terribly enlightening for a music geek). I just sort of walked around and thought, "oh, he was tall" or "he was short" when looking at the clothes (highlights were seeing Bowie and Princes costumes, heh). It was loud in some exhibit spaces...I dunno, it was very MTV.

i had a good time.
i like the Experience Music Project in Seatle much more, but that was largely due to show about Dylan and the attention to local stuff like the grunge explosion which was fun to read about from a hometown perspective.

IT's totally worth it to go once I think. I thought it was really cool actually. I mean it's not the greatest thing ever, but what is on this board?

I went a couple years ago and enjoyed it. I expected mostly BIG NAME artist stuff, which it had, but there was also a surprising amount of artifacts from under the radar artists. There was also a "Music in Ohio" exhibit with shit from the O'Jays, the notebook Neil Young wrote "Ohio" on and even a box of Guided By Voices memorabilia.

It was expensive, but it was a good time. Save yourself a coat check and leave your camera in the car. They don't allow them inside the exhibit area.

Same for me. If it were me, I wouldn't make a special trip to see it. I went after hours 5 years ago or so and basically had the place to myself and still didn't think a whole lot of it.

It's cool. Especially the early stuff from cats in the 50's. Some good Bowie stuff, clothes and whatnot. Some cool gear if you like looking at guitars. Also some garbage like TLC jumpsuits. I've been a couple times and have always enjoyed myself.

You know, if you're in a "touring band" with a CD, it's free. And they take your word for it, if you know what I mean. I paid once with the wife; we should have just handed over a Mates of State CD.

Do some research if you're staying over night. I've had fun in Cleveland, but you could end up in some lame tool-fest at Dick's Last Resort.

Go to Great Lakes Brewing Company.

What about if you hit it on the drive back?

I've never had to pay to go in, usually cause i was playing there, and then Daystar threw me some free tix...

I probably wouldn't pay to go, but I've enjoyed it every time i've been there.

I dug it. I wish I had more time to spend there actually. I think the key is the upstairs exhibit that always changes. Later this month they're doing Roy Orbison, May 20 to Sept 4 Bob Dylan & in October The Clash. When I was there it was “Reflections: The Mary Wilson Supreme Legacy Collection,” an exhibit featuring more than 50 Supremes costumes and rare memorabilia.. YAWN!

Probably worth going to if you're on a sight-seeing trip. It's pricey though and keep your expectations low. It's cool to see it and say you've been but the Hard Rock Cafe comment is right on the money.

Do we share a stomach?

I like you more and more. Yeah, they've got great food and great beer, but if you don't get that bread pudding, you're a sucker.

Also, the main exhibit is crucial. John Lennon? Oh hell yeah. U2 was even o.k. The Who was sweet. You gotta try and time it right.

i like the place. everytime i go i walk away with a new interest in a band/musician that i never gave much thought before. but, i've also spent a lot of time in there just pouring over everything. and the featured movies have always been well done.

it's pricey. but worth it, in my opinion.
