i found my cats old bag of catnip and she was playing with it yesterday for a while, and then she stopped, laid back, and stared at me with wide open eyes and her mouth slightly ajar for about 10 minutes, if not close.

my cats sometimes get lockjaw i think, because my other cat sometimes walks around with her mouth open..
i dont know. it's weird. they go nuts over this stuff.

Effects on cats
Catnip and catmints are mainly known for, and named after, the effects they have on cats, particularly domestic cats. Approximately two thirds of cats are susceptible to the effects of catnip, as the phenomenon is hereditary.
Catnip contains nepetalactone, a terpene, that is thought to mimic feline sex pheromones. Cats detect it through their vomeronasal organs. When cats sense the bruised leaves or stems of catnip, they will rub in it, roll over it, paw at it, chew it, lick it, and leap about and purr. Some cats will also growl and meow. This reaction only lasts for several minutes before the cat loses interest. It takes up to two hours for the cat to "reset" and then it can come back to the catnip and have the same response as before. Young kittens and older cats are less likely to have a reaction to catnip but big cats, such as tigers, seem to be extremely sensitive to it.
Cat owners do not need to worry about allowing their cats access to catnip because there are, for the most part, no negative side effects to it. However, some cats become overly excited when exposed to catnip, and so aging cats with heart troubles should not be given it.
Other plants that also have this effect on cats include Valerian and plants that contain actinidine or dihydroactinidiolide (Smith, 2005).
At least three species attract cats, Nepeta cataria, N. grandiflora and N. × faassenii, but most other species have not been tested. Of these, both true catnip and Faassen's catnip have a sharp, biting taste, while the taste of giant catmint is bland.

Yeah my cats love it.

We keep the container up top the frig and our younger cat hops up there all the time and will literally push the damn thing off the frig and onto the floor.

Or if I'm standing near the frig, onto or at my head. Seriously.

I only let them have it once a week now. They had some addiction issues when we were giving it to them more often.

mine is in a burlap case, i don't have freestanding leaves or anything. my cat keeps biting and scratching to get it open.
it's so strange. is it really the equivalent of crack for humans (i realize that this was a joke)? but i'm interested to know.

i would say it's not like any drug, because it doesn't involve the ingestion or inhalation of any substances, just (or mostly) an internal hormonal reaction, hence the low incidence of side effects.

It sounds like it's more of an orgasm for cats.

my 6 month old kitty loves it.....well basically, she is like a crack addict most of the time anyway, this just turns her up one more notch.

For you, CP, it'd be like if you could bottle Blue Milk's smell. Or something like that.

We keep a ziploc baggy of this stuff in the cupboard. So any time we go into that cupboard for peanut butter or soup or crackers, Mooch comes tearing in and leaping up onto the dresser underneath and starts meowing.
