We have some Americans staying at my college for a semester, and there are several things I want to know but am afraid to ask:

- All of them are democrats, but they still support Bush? When i ask them if they think Bush isn't doing a very good job they all respong simultaneously (as if trained) with: "I don't know, but he's our president so we gotta support him and everythng he does." Is this response commonplace amongst young democrats? I mean, WTF?

-Why do all the dudes wear a white or black t-shirt under their button-up shirts? Like this: Image ???

I've been pondering these for the last couple of weeks and as you can imagine my misunderstanding of your culture is quite vexing.

#1 - not commonplace. Unless staunch republicans, most will express verbal disapproval of bush

#2 - Sweat buffer, I assume. I wear an undershirt in the winter because it is f'n cold here, but skip it in the warmer months

Undershirts? Because we aren't godless heathens skipping around in animal skins, you savage.

I don't know why other people wear t-shirts under button-up shirts but I do it so that if I get all sweaty it doesn't seem to soak through the button-up as much.

#2--always wear a tee under button downs, cause I sweat. In the winter I do it so if I get hot I can peel layers. In the summer its strictly a style thing.

I haven't gotten into the "popping" of the collar thing yet though.

Haha... that response regarding Bush isn't commonplace where I live unless you're asking some frat boy in his SUV. For a good time, go to Google, type 'failure' in the search box and click 'I'm Feeling Lucky'.
And about the white/black shirt thing... I'm not a dude, so I can only guess. Most of my guy friends do this when they wear button-downs. Guess they are just raised that way. I would guess for sweating purposes? And for those more sheer fabric button-downs so you can't see nipples/areolas through the shirt.

yeah i get the feeling that they're frat boys and girls who are very wealthy.

But why don't y'all wear singlets instead? They're invisible to the outside world and they do the same job.

I always wear a shirt under a button-up shirt. But I'm really skinny, so I always dress in layers.

Because I'm not a wrestler. Seriously, I only wear a singlet if I'm biking, and then its only the pants.

are you referring to when the ex rugby-playing metrosexuals wear their collars 'up' as opposed to the conventional 'down'?

Don't ever do that. They are referred to as the "Collar-Up Boys" and they always have thickly gelled hair with blond streaks. Some girls go crazy for tossers like that.

#2 About the sweat thing, mgl is in Brisbane (I think, or even further north), so wearing an undershirt in summer is going to make you sweat a lot more in that muggy heat. Surely they found it more comfortable to only wear one layer?

I also don't think it looks as good. All the guys at the colleges at my uni wear polos by themselves and they look much better.

btw, which uni are you at?

I'm not talking about an athletic singlet, just a Stanley Kowalski-style-get-home-from-work-and-beat-your-woman -and-take-off-your-shirt-but-leave-your-singlet-and-suspenders-on-style singlet. You know, a Wife Beater singlet.

This was actually me trying to be funny. I would never pop my collar. Yes, it refers to guys who collars up, and these people usually listen to really bad R&B or reggaton club hits.

I don't look good in wife beaters. My chest hair kinda curls above the top, and I usually look like some hobo.

then how do you account for Sean Connery and Gregory Peck luring woman to their hair-shirts like the pied goddamn piper?

Ugh. Yeah there's heaps of those types here too decked out in their Polo Ralph Lauren polos, because a non-designer one for half the price is clearly not good enough (well it is Sydney Uni after all). Typically rich private school idiots.

Although there's also a horrible trend among college boys of rocking up to their morning classes in tracksuit pants, Canturbury tops and ugg boots. NOT COOL. Keep that shit for mooching around inside college.

Hmmm... chest-hair-as-booty-catalyst? I don't think some guy showing me his chest hairs would seal the deal. I can't stand seeing those dudes that wear their shirts halfway unbuttoned so everyone can marvel at their chest sproutage.
