Everyone who has even a passing interest in power pop NEEDS to own this record:
Image

Imagine Matthew Sweet crossed with The Flying Burrito Brothers and that is this record. "Time Wraps Around You" came up on a mix I was listening to this morning and it made me sad that I only have the vinyl (and no means to play it anymore). I think I need to get to Best Buy at lunch today and see if it's in stock.

The rest of you should do the same. It is a perfect album.

Their cover of "Why Not Your Baby" demands to be played over and over again.

Ric Menck is god. I can't wait to read his 33 1/3 book about The Notorious Byrds Brothers

I played a Gene Clark tribute show here in Chicago and one of the songs I did was "Why Not Your Baby". Only, I based my version more on the V.C. version than the original. It's goddamn perfect.

And "Time Wraps Around You" also demands to be played multiple times in succession.

By the way, welcome shakerevard... yer new here. huh?

I'm a lurker from WAY back. I remember the rise and fall of the CMJ board, and I followed everyone here. When inspired, I post.

It's great, but I don't think the greatest.

Another brilliant one-off power pop album is that one by Moods for Moderns. Did they break up, or are they simply working on their own version of Chinese Democracy?

np: Shearwater - "The World in 1984"

Didn't know they were in Koufax. Social Life is pretty good.

np: Van Halen - "Light Up the Sky"

That Moods for Moderns record is also killer. Good call. I need to pull out that one this evening. I also have a sampler that contains their cover of ELO's "Do Ya." Good stuff.

Are you familiar with the original verion of "Do Ya" by The Move?
Or are you familiar with anything by The Move for that matter? I am a huge Roy Wood fan... not as much Jeff Lynne. But perhaps this is a conversation for a different thread.

Oh yeah, I have The Move's four studio albums. I do love Roy Wood. I found a video clip of him performing "Forever" years ago on some British show. Great performance.

I've been meaning to look into them for a while but I couldn't find any tracks for download last time I looked.

Therefore, I can't claim it to be the greatest. Besides, nothing beats

for me.

FYI, much to your relief and the relief of the board, at large, I'm sure... I took that particular conversation into PMs.

You're welcome.

Oh, I don't mind, I chalk it up as one of those endearing board idiosyncracies.

It's Out Of The Shadows, but I don't know if I'd consider that power pop anyway. It's too Shinsy in parts. Especially tracks like "Postage Stamp World".

I knew there was a reason why we clicked.

BIG ups to FT and anyone else who digs on Moods For Moderns. Saw them once without knowing who they were and was promptly blown away. It's funny because the drummer (Dave Shetler) had been in an emocore band like a year earlier and going from that to MFM was an amazing shift to pull off.
