I think Monster is an overcriticized record.

Me, too. "What's the Frequency, Kenneth?" and "Star 69" are two of my all-time favorite R.E.M. tunes. Did any of you see Letterman way back when Monster came out, and Dan Rather actually sang "WTF, K?" backed by R.E.M.? CLASSIC!!! It was especially hilarious, because Letterman had been using that Rather incident as a punchline for years before R.E.M. wrote a song about it.

np: Shel Silverstein - "Sahra Cynthia Sylvia Stout Would Not Take the Garbage Out"

"Crush With Eyeliner"

Aside from whatever I admit to buying or listening to on the board, I've got exactly zero people around me in my daily life who know anything about music. And even the caustic remarks I've gotten around here don't bug me, but they do make me want to argue a bit.

Me too.

I read it was inspired by Stipe's youthful fixation on The New York Dolls and then dedicated to his friendship with River Phoenix.

Like the Stones and Dylan?

Does your independent leanings toward music sometimes precede you to the point that if you show interest or buy a mainstream record people tease you, or are flabbergasted at your decision?

I have found that people assume that I am being a snob when I lack general knowledge of contemporary pop culture.

Friend: Dude, that latest single from the Black Eyed Peas is so--

Me: I haven't heard it.

Friend: Sure you have--you probably hear it three times a day.

Me: I guarantee you I have not heard it.

Friend: You know it...it's the one with the video that--

Me: I have never seen it.

Friend: You HAVE seen it. Don't try to be all-

Me: Have you seen the latest Dora the Explorer DVD? Can you sing the theme to Bob the Builder? Do you know the character's names in Madagascar? I have, I can, and I do.

I'm not indie-hip. I'm sheltered parent.

Who is T.I.?

I'll tell you.

T.I. is connected nationwide, but in the Souff he's a King.

I like Loog's description about seeking entertainment based on likes and dislikes vs. being force fed commercialism. I think that is the best description.

I haven't bought an ultra mainstream album in a while, but it doesn't bother me when I do. If I like it, I like it.

People, though, just don't seem to know why they like what they like--they just do, whereas we all seem to.
