Go, you'd be surprised how often people got out alone, its a good way to meet people (i.e. girls) outside of your circle, too.

i agree, as long as you're not afraid to start conversations with strangers it can be fun--however, it's harder to do if you go to a really scenster place.

edit:

the only time i do this is for a big soccer match here that none of the americans i know are interested in. but in that case the bar is packed and everybody is there for the same reason, so it's a much more comfortable environment

do this all the time

Used to go solo every week, but I was going to play billiards--there just happened to be a bar there as well.

The closest I've come to doing this was being pretty sure a friend was going to be there and knowing the bartender.

I go by myself all the time, but I know most of the bartenders where I go and always run into someone I can at least converse with for little bits of time.
When I first moved to Lincoln, I went out with old high school friends to the shittiest frat/preppy bars, so when I started going to shows or the more indie bars, I had to go alone and meet people.
It was the best way of running into people I hadn't seen in years and meeting a bunch of indie musicians.

Wow, I can't believe how many people haven't done this. I enjoy stopping and getting a drink by myself once in a while. I usually only stay an hour or less unless theres a good game on or something but I do enjoy it.

My friends discourage it, but I've done it a time or two before.

Second'd... But, when I do this, I do it up in the style of my homestay family's patriarch. I leave the bar after five or six pints in an hour's time, smelling as though I had bathed in beer.

If only I could this, here, with Bergenbier and/or Ciuc, or, even, Timisoreana. But, no....

Also, the reading idea is a good one. Though, I tend to read magazines -- Atlantic, Harper's -- at the bar.

The bar with my favorite bartender is close for more than a month.

I'm thinking about showing up at his house alone.
