I haven't downloaded anything yet but I did sign up and am impressed with the selection. I'm definitely going to grab Destroyer and will probably nab Parts and Labor and New Pornos as well. Lots of good stuff. I've started with the basic $10/month subscription but I can totally see up-grading once I get addicted to this.

I just did their free trial of 50 dloads and am most likely going to subscribe. Great site and easy to use. If you don't mind just having digital versions then it's perfect and cheap. The only drawback is that I like actually having the physical copy of an album. I don't want to lose that.

I got:

Two Gallants- The Throes
Heartless Bastards - Stairs and Elevators
Animal Collective - Feels
Neko Case - Fox Confessor Brings the Flood

So what's going to happen with this site once the major labels realize they need to get their artists on here. Seriously, this site is awesome, the only complaint I have is that most of the new releases aren't on eMusic right away and many of the big names don't have any presence at all (Radiohead, Wilco, U2, etc.). Still, I'm amazed by the quality of music available on eMusic.

"big names" aren't on emusic because they are on a major. majors current tie to digital sales is itunes selling albums at $10 a pop. itunes is doing well (as far as i know) with this model, so i'm unsure if their model will approach emusic or the other way around. the common person doesn't know much about drm and kps, etc.

for new releases, i've tended to see a lot of indie artists new stuff coming out on the release date. sure, some are delayed days or weeks, but most come out on their new release tuesday. recent examples = dresden dolls, eagles of death metal, DBT, neko, josh rouse, ambulance ltd, calexico and pretty girls make graves.

for indie artists i like and anticipate new releases, i've been keeping (undocumented) track of this. if said artist stays/is on an emusic-covered-label, then their new release will be here on release day. there are some exceptions (i'm still waiting on the new new amsterdams and maximo park b-sides) but most of the time, emusic nails it.

That's what I figured, the two go hand-in-hand. I'm guessing the majors have an exclusive agreement with iTunes or something. Still, you'd think if eMusic catches on more and more, the majors will get pressure to at least release some of their big artists' back catelogues.

I've also noticed a lot of the indie artists relasing titles on the same day as the CD. It seems like indie labels are using eMusic as another outlet to get their bands out there. For music fans like me, the site is great, I just wonder if it will catch on with fans of more mainstream stuff since the majors aren't hopping on board.

Nothing but good to say about. I even like waiting for the recharge date to come up - it's like being set loose in a record store with a gift card.

Here's my one sentence review (jewels certainly deserves more, but I suck like that):

Professional Fishstick is a one-man jam combining both the vocal and stylistic elements of such iconoclastic predecessors as Lou Reed and Frank Black, yet still managing to brew an original aural intoxicant.

np: Richard Hell & The Voidoids - "Blank Generation"

I'm starting to realize I may not actually know the meaning of "iconoclastic." Anyhoo, Fishstick is good. Buy it. Listen to it. Live it. Love it.

np: 16 Horsepower - "Single Girl"
