Exactly. It certainly catches ones attention, though.

Probably one of the best commercial programs I've seen. I'm not sure who their marketing company is, but they are completely making them stick out, in a good way.

While the "Fast" ads are funny, and these are pretty good at standing out, those old VW ads will definitely be more memorable.

Commentary on "Fast", for anyone who might be interested:

Crispin Porter + Bogusky are marketing/design/trend setting geniuses, and have been truly inspiring to me. I love following their work, and seeing what they'll come up with next.

Of these ad's, this is my favorite...

Just horrible.

I can see wanting to associate your car with "safe," but just looking at this car makes me feel a sense of impending doom - even if they survive on the commercial. Really odd. The VW marketing firm is working on a primal level.

I like the VW "Oh Snap"one, where they flip the car in the air and it just smashes to the ground.

I saw one of these VW ads the other night - it totally jarred me. It is certainly well done. But very disturbing.

VW has a history of needing to do this every ten years or so. They do some things very well, but others they don't have nailed down yet. So when the market shifts, they keep hitting BIG snags. And when they do, they fire their old ad firm (who did them well for 8-9 years) and get somebody new.

See: 60's Beetle "Hi" ads, Drivers Wanted, Fahrfergnugen, etc.

VW should probably do a mash-up of the Oh Snap and Collision spots by showing horrible accidents in tricked-out Civics where the drivers get decapitated and splattered all over the road. Because they're uncool AND unsafe.

I guess you're right - found some numbers that VW was up big in March in the U.S. Shows how much I know about advertising, automobies, the marketplace, popular trends, human psychology, and most everything else.

I had a Jetta and it turned out to be a piece of shit. So, it's not the commericials keeping me away.

I rented an '06 Jetta for my current business trip and it's pretty sweet. Lots of cool features that I haven't seen in other cars and it's fun to drive. All was going well until the turn signal got stuck on. It finally turned off after a couple minutes but made me feel like a dork.

They're doing some great interior design work, but they, like BMW, are designing ahead of their reliable engineering capabilities right now. It's one thing to design a seat with 14 switches and 30 motors, but it's another to make one that doesn't break.

that's strange. my wife has had 2 BMW 325i's, and she's had zero problems with both. i've had a Jetta for going on 5 years, and it's been smooth sailing. only just now [110,050 miles] there's an electrical glitch on one of the engine sensors. it runs fine, but i've gotta get it fixed so the light goes off.

The three series has been largely spared that treatment. It's mostly the 7 series, where they really tried to innovate. It got Bad. It's going away, but now mercedes is taking up that slack because they've spent their last few years fixing Chrysler and ignoring their own house. Sales ain't great, and reviews/complaints are stacking up.

That electrical issue your jetta got is the flavor I'm thinking of, but you got some miles out of it first. Mom's 97 passat had one at about 50,000 miles where everytime it got really hot out, it wouldn't start. 4 visits and a new dash later, it still happened, and it wasn't "warranty."

A friend tried to buy an alternator from the athens, ga, vw dealership, and they asked him for $700. Not installed, mind you, just for the part. I wouldn't have believed it had I not been there. I snorted laughter, said something like "for a $75 Bosch alternator?!? Is there a gold nugget hidden in it?" and we left.
