Ok, I know Tom Petty sucks now and everything and that these opening bands aren't exactly "cutting edge" but Trey Anastasio will be opening for him on the first leg of his summer tour followed by Pearl Jam (split head-liners), then the Allman Brothers. I probably won't make an effort to go but these bands he's playing with normally headline their own shows. Does anyone else find this billing odd?

Petty is far from sucking!

Sounds to me like split-bills, which are pretty common these days for the summer sheds.

Maybe Trey is tring to slightly broaden his crowd?

First Janis Joplin, now Tom Petty. What the fuck is wrong with you people?

But Tom Petty mentions Indiana in one of his songs. That's huge for us Hoosiers!

I'm probably the biggest TP fan on Obner, but even I wouldn't go that far. The Last DJ had a handful of decent tracks, one or two even pretty good, but Echo was an absolute steaming turd. The last complete album he really nailed was the She's The One soundtrack.

np: Cryan Shames - "Sugar and Spice"

YEah, Walls is up there with my faves...this is when I wish Dunwoody was still around, cos Petty, to me is like Creedence was to him (well, me to) You don't like Petty, you don't like Rock N Roll...and I have that 2 disc best of set, but one of the discs is fucked up.

Oh yeah, and Petty is QUAL drunk rock.

He's QUAL, even if he is from Gainesville, and would (prolly) be on the other side of the World's Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party?

Yeah, I guess he gets a pass..not sure where his allegiance lies, but I'm not sure if he is ugly like a Gator or ugly like a Bulldog...

If you consider 10 years ago to be recent, ya geezer! The Brothers McMullen will all soon be wearing Depends.

I liked Petty through She's the One and still really like some of his older stuff so I don't mean to put him down. It seems like his popularity has been wanning for about 10 years now though so I thought it was interesting that he's touring (and headling) shows with bands that can pull in a pretty big crowd on their own.

And, seriously, being from Indiana doesn't help me like Petty. He's second only to Mellencamp in being over-played around here.

"Climb That Hill," "Grew Up Fast," "Hung Up and Overdue," and "Supernatural Radio" are all among my fav Petty tunes ever. That is a GREAT album. Probably his best, after Damn The Torpedos and Hard Promises.

np: The Weakerthans - "A New Name For Everything"

While his musical output has declined in recent years, he gets kudos from me for his heartfelt portrayal of Luanne's boyfriend Lucky on King of the Hill.

np: Pavement - "So Stark (You're a Skyscraper)"

I bought and then liked She's The One so much I went out and got Echo, which I then crammed down my own throat until I liked it too. I listened to it again recently, and still got some enjoyment out of it.

Yeah that's what I was getting at, I guess. Well put. I doesn't set me on fire, but it's pretty solid.

this sums it up good, but I can't say I have listened to much after She's the One

might I add TPH mostly, his solo stuff never stayed long on my racks, overkill I guess.

... and Long After Dark is seriously critically underrated[AMG wise]
