When you have to communicate with someone at work, be it a co-worker or customer, when it is not a face-to-face situation do you prefer to do so by phone or e-mail?

For me, it's DEFINITELY e-mail, all the way. It's much easier to have support documentation to substantiate any possible dispute that may arise down the road, if you've communicated back and forth via e-mail. Plus, there isn't the annoyance of "playing phone tag" or being cornered into a seemingly inescapable round of mindless chit-chat.

The reason I'm even bringing this up is because we have a particularly annoying vendor (think "Janice" from TV's "Friends") who INSISTS on doing everything by phone, even very simple FYI-type stuff that only warrants a quick e-mail. Even when I send her an e-mail that requires a basic answer ("yes" or "no", etc.), she ALWAYS calls me rather than replies with an e-mail. I wish she was a guy, so I could kick her in the nuts.

Unless its something that really NEEDS to be talked about, EMAIL me...

I am almost ALWAYS at my cpu...and if you don't get a response, it pretty much means I DON'T LIKE YOU.

Telegraph messages are my number one followed closely by written notices from a page boy in full dress uniform including the fez hat.

Dude, other than BTS and the 'Fins, we're still pretty much on the same page. And I'm actually becoming more interested in Miami by the day, especially with the tantalizing prospect of a potential mano-a-mano Culpepper-Harrington QB competition!!!

I handle 95% of even the most meaningless communication face to face.

Otherwise it's usually just a heads up email.

talking takes too long.

I like emailing, because I get answers in writing. I can send photos and drawings to make things more clear. I also like doing things on my time, and on others people's time. I prefer someone responding to an email after they have had time to research it and give me a good solid correct difinitive answer, instead of something on the fly in a conversation where I catch them off-guard and then they don't remember making the decision later anyway.

Depends on the type of communication. Sometimes it's not so wise to have things in writing, and sometimes it's nearly essential.

Email.

I have all my clients just email me for anything.

It basically becomes just an electronic to-do list for me.

Instant Messenger and Email.

IM works best, because it's instant contact. Plus you can transfer files.

Definitely email. If my clients didn't seem to like to call me so much, I'd just get rid of my phone. I hate the sound of the phone ringing and I hate that after having a conversation I don't have what I agreed to do in writing.

(when i have a job that isnt manual labour) i much prefer to e-mail because im not a good talker, in that i have a hard time getting across what someone needs to know when i talk to them. its much easier with e-mail since you can control exactly what needs to be said before you send it to someone.

I like email, because most of my workplace communications are either directives or complaints from my boss. While he is functionally illiterate and I have some troubles deciphering his message, I'd much rather receive an email than have him yell at me for something I usually have no control over nor am I responsible for.
