I'm dubbing a Led Zeppelin DVD onto CD so he can play it in his cube and in his car. It features a concert from 1970, several tracks from the 1973 Madison Square Garden show, and other concert footage.

They have to have been one of the worst bands ever to take the stage. Page has got to be one of the most over-rated guitar players, ever. Plant's voice is the only thing that holds the band together. It's one giant trainwreck after another. Each player is completely oblivious to what the other three are doing...it's awful.

They're perfectly enjoyable, but a little overrated. I think the overzealous fans put me off a little bit, which im aware isnt a good reason to not listen to a band.

(guitarist perspective)

Page played 8 guage strings... tiny. REALLY thin. Easy to bend, almost elastic. Stevie, by way of comparison, played 11's or 12's... massive amounts of effort. Page had good taste, but he also "partook" alot, so (live) he tended to be pretty loose. He was tight in a studio though.

I had the same reaction when I first saw The Song Remains The Same.

Agreed.

I always thought that Zep were "sloppy geniuses". Some live recordings sound amazing, others sound like they could barely hold it together.

I've never liked Led Zeppelin at all, but I had a near religious experience while playing "Heartbreaker" really loud in the car the other night.

I'm not a guitarist or a true musician by any circumstance, but I'd take Page over Clapton anyday and Zeppelin over The Who on most things. I'd tend to say Plant was there weakness. Bonham was a great drummer, Page a sloppy, but excellent guitarist and the work JPJ did is truly underrated.

JPJ was an amazing musician...unfortunately he took backstage to Page and Plant, who had so much more presence. He was unbelievably versatile in what he could play instrument-wise, i'd have to say he made more than a few songs better with his talent.

But that's the maddening thing. I concur, JPJ was the best of the lot. But Plant and Page = Presence (no pun intended)? The live footage is awful, those two in particular are just so detatched--no rapport with the audience whatsoever, no rapport with each other...WHATSOEVER. Page never looks at the audience, he never looks at the other players, he's totally out of touch--and if it's because he's "partaken", then fuck him. He can't play the solos he attempts, his every "performance" is the source of spoofs such as Nigel Tufnel in Spinal Tap and Manowar's "Black Arrow".

The Zep live formula = background of a wicked groove that was well-executed in the studio, but abandoned after 45 seconds on stage to indulge in untold minutes of poorly conducted solo wankery.

I just know I like a lot of their songs. Page could be the most useless prat on the planet for all I know.

I'd have to agree with Zeppelin over the Who, but their live stuff is mostly awful, cant really detract from their studio work though. As for Page "partaking" has anyone wondered how Bonham actually plays as drunk as he must have been at concerts...he had a class of whisky sitting near the set last time i saw a video of them.

I think Page is one of the most innovative guitarists ever. Technically one of the best? Probably not but he created such a clean, tight sound in the studio. To me, his sound is one of the most unique ever and had a huge influence on the direction of rock music after the 60's.

Maybe they weren't the best performers but in the studio, they were great.

Sure i dont want to detract from Page, great musician, but he's a riff-writer, and it means that after a few, he gets a little sloppy on stage. It doesnt help his sound...kind of the opposite of hendrix, who i feel was the king of sloppy playing.
