it's an irish girl's name and probably one of my favorite names. it's pronounced "shi-VANN".

hamilton says it in "hang on, Siobhan" on Bows and Arrows.

Lost that one.

As far as girl Irish names, I also like Eithne. For the longest time, I thought it was pronounced "Eth-nah", cuz there was a girl in my HS who pronounced her name that way (probably for ease). But, it's actually pronounced "En-ya" (yes, like the artist).

It's Shee-VANN or Shee-VAUN. Accept no substitute.

From http://www.babynamesofireland.com/pages ... s-n-z.html

Name: Siobhan
Pronounced: "shiv + awn"
English: Shevaun, Shavon, Chevonne
Description:
Siobhan is another Irish form of Joan meaning "God is gracious." A popular name in Ireland where the anglicised versions are often used. Siobhan McKenna, an Irish actress who died in 1986, was considered by many as a woman who personified all that was good about being Irish.

That site has a lot of cool names -- I better start birthing girls so I can give 'em Irish names!

Yup, kevin and then tania got it right.

Otherwise I was going to have to correct those of you that were giving the pronunciation with a "b".

I have a cousin with the name. That's what happens when you come from a big Irish family.

I love that name too. I like all Irish and most French names for girls. And I think I'm one of the few people who likes Nora for a girl. It's a simple Irish name. But I think it's purty.

Yes. But Norah O'Donnell -- big-eyed politics news wench on Hardball -- is a cheap son'bitch. For instance, at a DC press dinner in early '01, she stole away with the floral arrangement from the table at which she and her escort were sat. But, come on, that's ridiculous, considering the money she makes from MSNBC; she could buy her own flowers.

Really.

So, I would never name a daughter Nora(h), so as she would not cause to spring to my mind that story of the skin-flint news correspondent.

Hiss & Boo. I'll hear none o' yer Norah-hate, son. Makes journalism worthy watching, does she.

I used to work with someone by this name. I probably pronounced it correctly 13% of the time. The rest of the time it probably sounded like I was sneezing.

I am not a baby-father*... To anyone that I know about.

*Have adopted this term since hearing it on the Dizzee Rascal album. Such propriety to describe a (generally) improper subject, i.e. bastardy.

I like Siobahn and Nora as girl names... Isn't Ciara also Irish? I've always been fond of that one as well (pronounced like Kyra Sedgwick).

i get really annoyed that 90% of people mispronounce our dog's name (seamus). yes, we really named our pet "see-mus".

I love that name! And it's especially cute for a dog. There was a guy on the Today show a couple of weeks ago, filling in for Al Roker. His name was something like Sean McLoughlin, but they pronounced his name as "Seen." Turns out, the guy has a twin brother who is also named Sean, so they call the other brother by the proper pronunciation and this poor guy gets stuck with Seen.
