From the current Under The Radar, this pretty much sums up exactly how I feel.

Quote:
Arctic Monkeys:
Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not
(Domino)

"You probably won't hear a better CD all year long," announces the New York Times. "Perfect," exclaims Slate Magazine. Under The Rader's own August Brown declares it: "the most exciting record of 2006." Can any one album live up to such proclamations? Certainly not Arctic Monkeys' underwhelming debut. After reading all the rabid and irrational acclaim that this album has received, don't be surprised if you're left scratching your head in confusion and disbelief when you finally hear the damn thing. While this album certainly has its sporadic catchy and promising moments, Arctic Monkeys are not, I repeat, not the future of music and have little new or original to offer to the world. Musically, they are simply a second-rate Franz Ferdinand or Libertines. The band's uninspired lyrics have been acclaimed for their witty take on British teenage life, but if you want commentary of Britain, then the likes of Mike Skinner, Morrissey, Ray Davies, Damon Albarn, and Jarvis Cocker have all done it so much better. For a classic debut album that humorously tackles British teenage life, seek out Supergrass' I Should Coco instead.

This reviewer is not against hype just for the sake of it, but there are so many better bands out there that deserve all the press and acclaim that Arctic Monkeys are getting for a record that is essentially tedious, forgettable, highly derivative, and perhaps the most overrated album of the last five years.

4 Blips out of 10

I saw their cheapass video on MTV early this morning. It was craptacular and the song wasn't any better. I personally think they look like half of the bands here made up of the non Jack Johnson/DMB fan fratboys. Like Thom Yorke said about Pablo's Honey, These guys sucked satan's cock to get this much hype.

A great example of a band that is all hype and no substance.

Blech.

I pretty much agree with the review but still like Arctic Monkeys overall. I try not to think about how much hype they got, and just enjoy the music.

I only heard of em around here, but I was underwhelmed by the review...it's almost there, but the lack of hooks/pop sensibility impedes my enjoyment.

I think they're great. Not as great as Sir Dalen says, but great nonetheless.

Bass player & drummer own (especially for a couple of fucking kids)

They don't have a song as good as "The Fallen" or "Walk Away" off the last Franz album though. Not yet at least.

Lots of potential but I think the album is pretty average. Some strong songs but I don't think they've found "it" yet.

That's not a review of the Arctic Monkeys, that's a review of the hype over the Arctic Monkeys. Some of you folks have really gotta learn the difference.

Same.

Not compelled either, maybe I'll wait till they're forgotten, and make a point of checking them out say, a year and a half from now, that way I'm not disappointed by all the smoke that's being blown up their ass.

Funny enough, it turns out "it" was adult-contemporary rock radio.

I bought it...it has its moments. Haven't really got into it though. So for now I dub it "overhyped."

Under the Radar is, for the most part, pretty generous in its reviews.

And yet it says everything that needs to be said about the band. It's a great review - I got a sense of what they sounded like and, even more, that the hype is completely overblown.

They'll be forgotten in two years, tops.

wow, i have a feeling if they were:

1. american
2. older
3. awkward looking like Of Montreal
4. playing some fucking boring, snorefest indie bullshit

...you all would be sucking their cocks.

some of you are as predictable as you claim these bands are.

I like them. I don't care about the hype. I don't personally know one person who owns this album.....apparently there isn't that much hype.
