Whoa - Now I can say I've never ever heard that one before.

Jewels - if you have time, track down 'Still Feel Gone' and play the track 'Still Be Around' a couple of times and tell me if you still feel the same way.

Or 'Gun' or 'Looking For A Way Out'.

Haters suck.
The first record is Hüsker Dü fronted by Hank, Sr.
Cathartic.
Still.
Farrar's guitar tone is explosive.

You are all wrong unless you agree with me.

Loog's obviously not heard 'Moonshiner' or 'Looking At the World Through A Windshield'. Let's right this wrong.

Seriously...how does loogar not love these songs?

Haven't waded too far in to them to really get to know anything. Boring to me = ejected from my stereo.

Loogs,
The track 'Whiskey Bottle' from No Depression brings out those same emotions I get from 'SHUT UP AND GET ON THE PLANE'....and you know what I'm talking about.

How is it possible that the band that spawned two great bands (okay, one great band and one good band) can be so, uninteresting. I mean I've tried really hard to like them. I have like four albums, including the anthology and I just don't get it.

I can think maybe three songs that I think are pretty good but...

Meh.

Sorry.

Count me as feeling the same. I had three UT discs and didn't find anything on them that I actually would want to listen to again. I like Son Volt's last album a LOT (one of the best of 2005, in fact) and I love Wilco, but Tupelo bores me to tears.

March is probably my favorite from their catalog, but jeez...such a consistent band. I'll admit that their hooks aren't as upfront as the 97s, Wilco, etc., but I think that's what can make a lot of their albums that much more rewarding. One of those bands I wish I could've seen live...

I do get a little tired of Farrar's more downtrodden/workers' plight stuff and tend to stick to Anthology these days.

i have a really hard time getting past Jay's voice, it sounds so put on and corny to me. So while i think a cover of "still be around" might rip my heart out, this version has a nice hook in the chorus but leaves me kind of dry.

Yep. Alt country is one of the genres most prone to formuliac songwriting. I think the lack of in-your-face, upfront hooks is one of the things that separates Farrar from lesser songwriters like Ryan Adams and Rhett Miller.

It's one thing if you think it's corny, but if you ever spent time with Jay you'd know he sings the same way he speaks. It's not a put on.

I personally think Jay Farrar has one of the coolest voices from the past 15 years and maybe ever.

one of my favorite bands of all time...probably top 5.

the line todd quoted - one of the best.

I don't see you through the windshield
I don't see you in faces looking back at me
alcohol doesn't have much that matters to say
can't imagine where you and time to kill will stay

when the bible is a bottle
and the hardwood floor is home
when morning comes twice a day or not at all
if I break in two will you put me back together
when this puzzle's figured out will you still be around
to say you've just been there
walking the line upside down

walked and breathed many a cancerous mile
where the bat of an eye is too slow to beat the coffin
they won't tell it on the TV
they can't say it on the radio
they pay to move it off the shelf and into our minds
until you can't tell the truth
when it's right in front of your eyes

when the bible is a bottle
and the hardwood floor is home
when morning comes twice a day or not at all
if I break in two will you put me back together
when this puzzle's figured out will you still be around
to say you've just been there
walking the line upside down

In fact I think I'd put Terroir blues at #2 among all farrar/tweedy releases.

Yeah, Farrar's voice isn't where my problem is - I think his voice is tremendous. I just don't actively seek out, you know, coal miner's songs and the like. Sometimes, they really do the trick, but I'm an easy listening chap mostly.

I don't really like "Whiskey Bottle" or "Moonshiner", but how can you not have fun with "Chickamauga"?

i'm really surprised to hear people like jay's singing style that much.
to each his own i guess.

tweedy is one of my favorites, but i don't think he had honed his skills yet on Tupelo albums.

tweedy's songs got a lot better over time in the UT albums but Farrar was consistently great.

And I don't see how anyone could see Tweedy voice as being superior to Farrar. I think Tweedy does as good as job as anybody getting away with less then good pipes. But Farrar is incredible.

Yeah, I gotta agree here. I like Tweedy better post-UT but because I think he writes better songs and is more interesting musically. Farrar definitely has the cooler voice.

Come one dude.

I hate Wilco other than Being There, so I guess it's not for Uncle Tupelo to seem more interesting to me. I'd still rather take No Depression, horrible lyrics included, over Summerteeth or A Ghost is Born ANY day of the week.

i am going to address a lot of the points in here at some point, but i just wanted to start off by saying that this thread is wrong. if you bought the anthology as a starter you'd probably be better served. jumping into "no depression" right off the bat will probably lead to this kind of a response. it would be like listening to "pablo honey" and saying that radiohead is boring.
