Nope, There are indeed white wines made from red grapes.

Here are the simple rules:
# Wine Styles Wines are primarily white or red, sweet or dry.
# Red wines are made from red grapes, being left in contact with the skins to pick up coloration and flavor compounds such as tannins. Heating may also extract color and flavor.
# White wines are made from either white or red grapes. The are generally not left in contact with the skins for any period of time once crushed.
# You can make white wine from red grapes but you can not make red wine from white grapes.
# Red table wines tend to be more complex, higher in tannins and are more often made in dry styles. However, there are important exceptions.

True.
With red wine they keep the skins on.
White has no skins.

Or something.
Right?

I don't think so... white wine in general comes from "white"...i.e. green grapes. Red grapes with the skins taken off produce "blush" wines, like rose or white zinfandel.

yeah, he's right. i knew white wine was from green grapes. how else do you explain a Riesling?

Not true...it just doesn't compliment food very well. A chilled Spatlese or Auslese is an awesome dessert wine.

And, a good Reisling does well with very spicy foods, Gewurtztraminer as well.

YAY! Riesling fans. I had a crash course in these when I worked over there... it came with meals at everyone's house.

For the non-fans, it's not all sweet. "Trocken" = "dry." Halb-trocken = half dry.

There is an explanation, but there is no excuse.

From Wikipedia:

Wines are red, white, or rosé (depending on the grape used and the amount of time the skins have been left to ferment in the juice). For red wines the entire crushed grape is utilized; for white wines, the juice only. In rosé wines, the skins are removed after fermentation has begun, thus producing a light pink color

I stand approved as corrected.

Not until I took a Shakespeare class my junior year of college did I realize that Oedipus was NOT pronounced OH-DIP-US and in fact was correctly pronounced ED-I-PUS.

I like dry Rieslings better than most whites. That said, I'd rather drink a red any day of the week.
