I just picked up The Closing of Winterland, New Years Eve 1978 by The Grateful Dead...I haven't bought a new Dead disc in at least 7 years, but just felt the need after randomly spying this.

I know there is ample hate and a little love for 'em round here, but as Bloor and I were saying today: You can hate the fans, you can the hippy dippy shit, you can hate what they became, but the music is a beast to be reckoned with.

The only songs I wish this had on it were "Must Have Been the Roses" and "Second that Emotion," but other than that, it looks like some serious shee.

Mark Twain would have roasted that crap bluegrass folkshit for the utter crap that it is. That's Langhorn rolled, man.

Someone should have explained to that stupid hippie fatpile that "Not Fade Away" was not a suggestion never to end the fucking song.

Were you dropped as a child?
Better yet, go the mirror, are your eyes a little too close together?
Are you mad cos the cool kids wouldn't talk to you so you had to beat it to that picture of George Best on the Wedding Present cover?

Sorry, they take a lot of disparate influences that form the core of the american musical experience and make it into something all their own, and, at the time it was being made, fun and relevant.

Not so much a fan of The Dead, but in their heyday, with ol Jerry still kickin;, THE MUSIC is phenomenal.

He won't admit, but it ain't the music he hates.

Oh yes it is. Can't stand the vocals, can't stand the lyrics, hate the guitars. The drumming's okay, I guess.

I thought the whole running joke was that Phil was never allowed to sing. Regardless, none of it works for me.

I also hate songs like Johnny B. Goode, Promised Land, Friend of the Devil, It's All Over Now, Stagger Lee and Big River...just terrible lyrics. Not to mention Hard to Handle or Second that Emotion.

Also interesting that you can't rattle off songs without a bunch of really crappy covers.

my friends in college sat around and listened to dead album after dead album, including numerous bootlegs (a bunch of hippy stoners). its ok for background music but nothing to get overly excited about.

No, did you get married in a black leather jacket with zippers on it and a safety pin through your nose?

And I threw those songs out, genius, because I mentioned in my post that they distilled a lot of distinctly American musical influences.

Great, so does the cover band that plays the dining room at the Holiday Inn every weekend.
