Hate the band. Hate the fans. But dammit, American Beauty and Workingman's Dead are good records. I wanted to hate them but couldn't. Especially American Beauty.

Exactly. The MUSIC is what matters, and the MUSIC is good.

Tell yourself that often enough, and sure enough, you believe it. You're still wrong, however.

The Dead are one of those bands I've never cared about. I don't know their catalogue very well, but I've never heard a single song by them that's interested me, and heard some (eg: "Truckin'") that make me want to eat my own ears so I never have to hear 'em again.

And it's too bad they were always too stoned to realize that none of them could sing.

I am a sometimes fan, and to say the music is unequivocally good is completely retarded. They have aout just under 10 great years, the rest is muddly dung.

This conversation has been had on this board well over 200 times.

Oh, not everything they play is fucking great. I couldn't sit through Space with a gun to my head, but to dismiss em out of hand is ludicrous.

And, yeah, we've talked about it, but [openlyredundant]At least its about music[/openlyredundant]

Hey, Loogar and I actually agree on something that isn't Exile on Main Street.

Oh, and all of you American/Workingman's-only fans can fuck off. You're as bad as the people that hate them because of their fans. Yeah, they're great albums, but so are all the ones that came before them (and most of the live material).

Learn to read fuck stain. Where does it say ONLY in my post? I think early Stones and Beatles albums are undertalked about too, but just cause I bring up Rubber Soul and White Album doesn't mean I don't dig Beatles For Sale and Help.

Calm down man. I don't even think I paid any attention to your post the first time through. By "all of you" I was referring to most Dead fans I know, including everyone at my school.

I get the hate especially on the drawn out noodling.

I do dig a good amount of songs and don't see them much more than as a hippifried country band, no jail, no rock. I consider them harmless and not far removed from Parsons, The Byrds, and others of that ilk.

Anyhow these are just a few songs I dig that aren't buried in their catalog, but aren't well known much either. I'm pretty sure they are GD/Hunter originals.

Althea
the Wheel
Deal
Loser
Tenessee Jed
Brown Eyed Woman
Jack Straw
Sugaree
New Speedway Boogie
China Doll
He's Gone
Dire Wolf
Scarlet Begonias

My take exactly. I'm not opposed to the GD, its just I've never heard anything (and I've heard a fair amount) that caught my attention.

Just listened to those albums for the first time last week. Up until that point I've only heard a couple of songs by this band. I thought they pretty good, I'd be interested in hearing some more. I've never heard a live track of theirs at all. That being said, I don't quite understand what instilled the slavish devotion in their dedicated fan base which developed into a lifestyle choice. I'm guessing this is a multivariate phenomenon coupled with a 'you had to be there'.
