i am going to address a lot of the points in here at some point, but i just wanted to start off by saying that this thread is wrong. if you bought the anthology as a starter you'd probably be better served. jumping into "no depression" right off the bat will probably lead to this kind of a response. it would be like listening to "pablo honey" and saying that radiohead is boring.

the first uncle tupelo i bought was no depression. i like them more than wilco, simply because i love still feel gone.
i like more than being there, by wilco, unlike my boyfriend, but i don't know. i still listen to uncle tupelo way more than wilco.
and i will be putting them on for the drive to work.. the whole minute drive.

go with "gun." if i could hear one minute of only one UT song, it would probably be gun. or "black eye." or maybe "we've been had."

Gun is one of my favorites as well. I put it on my "Road Songs" mix for driving through the Smokeys a few years back.

Never heard a single note of Uncle Tupelo.

I don't understand this at all. Are you trying to say you think No Depression is their worst? or that anthology is better? That's crazy talk.

This thread motivated me to give a long overdue spin to UT

np: No Depression

I'd prob. go with Anodyne as their most well-rounded offering, though. No Depression has an earnest quality to it that's hard to deny and I don't think it's as sub-par for the group as Pablo Honey, but I do prefer March and Anodyne overall...

i don't think it's as far away from the rest of their output as pablo honey is to radiohead's, but it's definitely my least favorite of the four. and easily so. i have no hard time putting at the bottom of the list but sorting out the other three is tough.

i think that as an intro to the band the anthology does an incredible job, a better one than No Depression would for someone completely unititated. anthology is a collection and inherently cannot be as good as any one of their albums. better intro.

If I were taking a standardized logics test I'd never throw those two thoughts together.

Other than Anondyne (due to tweedy's more prominent role), I don't think any of the albums are that stylistically different that you couldn't make a judgment call on whether you'd like them or not based on any of their albums. The anthology has a bit of an odds and sods feel to it. I'd view it as more something for completists than as the best introduction.

when i say something like that I mean that it wouldn't even register for me if I were to rank their albums. it's good, and for certain artists, anthologies are a better pickup than the entire catalog. UT is not one of those bands. I'm just taking the stance that Greatest Hits-ish albums shouldn't really be appearing on anyone's listmania, if you know what I mean.
