A friend and I were talking at lunch, and somehow it came up that I thought that

David Hidalgo (from Los Lobos) and Prince

would be a damn cool pariing.

Reasoning:
•Between the two of them, they could play any instrument on the planet.
•Both write damn good songs.
•Both are creatively restless and refuse to stick to any single genre... love to explore new music and sounds
•Despite the apparent lack of similarities, both have explored many of the SAME styles: rock, funk, jazz; and seem to share quite a few influences.

Prince and Hidalgo.
That would simply own.

What do you think?
Who do you think would make an excellent collaboration, that seems very odd, at first glance?

Yeah.
I am crazy.
So what?

Sadly, I'm over Prince.

I saw Prince at MSG last year, and it was one of my top 5 favorite concert experiences ever.

Damn man, I wish I had a friend who could reference both Los Lobos and Prince in the same conversation.

Ressurecting this thread... although the title sadly takes on another meaning at this time... But maybe this time we'll actually get a few more thoughts on this topic.

I'm listening to the new Tom Zé record (it's pretty great) and was thinking that another great pairing would be:

Tom Zé and Adrian Belew

Both have ties to David Byrne and both are rampant, insane experimenters. Hell, maybe throw Brian Eno into the mix? But that might be too many cooks.

Anyone else have thoughts on this?

That might be just the right amount of kooks. Or did you actually mean cooks? At any rate, it sounds damn intriguing.

I guess "kooks", in this case isn't a poor choice of words at all.

Either way it works. I'm picturing the three of them over a cauldron, Macbeth-style, just tossing shit in there coming up with the most ridiculous album known to mangkind.

AND
Prince is so teeny and Hidalgo is a goddamn bear of a man. The contrast is brilliant. It would probably make a better sit-com.

Hidalgo doesn't strike me as having an ego, but Prince strikes me as being a tyrant in the studio. While in a perfect world the outcome would be immense, I think Prince would eventually get through a plate glass window by Hidalgo.
