Led Zeppelin was comprised of two very well established session musicians who had been working with essentially every famous rock artist in the mid 60s, so they are at least half a supergroup.

The Who was comprised entirely of previously unknowns...

Charlie Parker
Dizzie Gillespie
Max Roach
Charles Mingus
Bud Powell

They made THIS RECORD

Jazz doesn't count.

Why? As a genre, it's all about collaboration, which is inherent to the premise of a supergroup. I mean, you could go on for tens of pages just about jazz supergroups, and we'd all be like, oh yeah, great supergroup, they were really amazing, blah blah blah.

Along the same lines, Miled Davis put together a decent band or two...

Coltrane
Adderley
Evans
Cobb
Chambers

or

Shorter
Hancock
Carter
Williams

Good point.
I also considered various Miles and Monk groups.
Yeah, there's a bunch of 'em.

And rap doesn't count for similar reasons to jazz.

All those fuckers do is collaborate. Collaborate with producers because they can't program a beat, cut up a record, or play an instrument... collaborate with other rappers because they can't string two verses in a row.

Great rappers are few and far between, hence too much collaboration.

Too many great jazzers leads to mutual respect and a desire to play with everyone which leads to more collaboration then you can digest.

But who's playing leads?

And is Phil Anselmo singing with him? I don't need to hear Coe and Anselmo unless they're covering some Loggins and Messina, or Hall and Oates.
