Guess I'll mention two British examples.

I have always loved the opening to The Prisoner. That crack of thunder and then....da da da...

That funky(in a Gallifreyan sorta way) theme to Doctor Who. Specifically the version used during the Tom Baker years.

What about you?

Steve

They just don't make TV theme show music like they used to.

I, Spy -- that syncopated off-kilter rhythm just does it for me.
Gotta second Twin Peaks -- simple, and gorgeous -- I was going to cover it and give it a beat before I heard Moby's Go.
ER -- practically gives me a heart attack, I'm going to cover that some day
Dark Shadows -- proto-goth
Munsters -- surf fun
Adams Family -- the finger snaps!

It might be cheesy but the opening guitar line of Simon and Simon has always stuck with me.

I think Futurama's is pretty good. The Odd Couple theme, too.

Streets of San Francisco. my uncle had one of those cds with tv themes and he'd listen to it in the car on long drives. i always loved the music, but wanted to kill the voiceovers.

Rita Moreno - she of "Heeyyyy yoouuu guuyyssss!!!" fame - was on the Diane Rehm show this morning on NPR and she talked about how awesome it was to be on that show w/ Morgan Freeman and Bill Cosby back in the day. They also played a bit of the theme song and it does indeed rule.

Cheesy? No way dude.

To most of the above I'll add:

Mama's Family
Good Times
opening and especially the closing themes of the Jeffersons
The Fall Guy
Miami Vice
90210

Family guy for sure, Peter's theme music was a funny bit.."riding on a bus, riding on a bus.."

even though I don't like the show that much, crankyankers opening tune is pretty good

I'll second Hawaii 5-0. Immediately came to mind.

Also Warren Zevon's "If You Won't Leave Me I'll Find Somebody Who Will" was the song for a short-lived show, "Route 66" I believe, but I never saw the show.
