Don't forget Lionel Richie.

I will say that I would have loved to have been there for Bruce's show. All reports say that it was fantastic and that he did "My City of Ruins" which left no dry eye in the house in that setting. Being in New Orleans to hear thousands of people sing in unison "COME ON RIIIISE UP!" during that song would've have been amazing.

Jambands have been doing Jazzfest for a while. This is just following the trend. When in doubt, blame Soulive and MMW (both of whom I dig... just sayin').

Because of this board's MASSIVE blind eye to Buffett, I guess I can understand this. He is from Mobile, went to Southern Miss and pretty much got his start in New Orleans.

Also, like his music or his fans or not, but dude is fucking cool as a cat.

I'll grant you "cool", but listening to his stuff is painful. We've a few die-hard parrots on our block, and a good friend in college was huge into Buffet--I've had more than my fair share of the Buffet.

Buffett is there pretty often. He was there when I went around 1998.

Your memory is correct. I think he's played since then too. And this is probably Dave Matthews third time since 99'.

I'm with GAR...ain't nothing wrong with Buffett. I have 4 JB discs in my collection and although I don't listen to them much I wouldn't trade 'em in. He's certainly lived/lifes his life to its fullest. I think I'd rather be a 60+ year old Buffett than a 20 something indie rock dude. And since jazzfest is all about combining mongering with music, Buffett is a damn fine fit for it.

I'm not sure Springsteen has ever played jazzfest, but all the others have played multiple times. When I saw Paul Simon at jazzfest a few years back...Aaron Neville joined him on stage to sing some duets of Simon & Garfunkel songs. Pretty cool. I don't like DMB but the great thing about jazzfest is that if the main stages are filled with dull bands (which rarely happens), the smaller zydeco stages are sure to be cookin' and whoever is signing in the gospel tent is sure to blow your mind.

I would think food alone would make Jazzfest infintely better than Coachella. And there are some seriously good night concerts too. I think Gomez go on at 2:00 Am after the midnight show of the Radiators at the Tiptina's.

As long as Dickie Brennan's Steakhouse has re-opened I am in complete agreement.

Those are the headliners but there are tons of New Orleans Jazz musicians that play and others. Dave Brubeck for one played either last year or the year before. That's the best part of the whole event is there is tons of different musicians that you can see and never see the headliners. It's more jazzffest in spirit but there is still plenty of jazz to catch. There's probably 10-20 Jazz Brass bands playing this year. Unfortuantely Brubeck doesn't draw out the crowds that Dave Matthews does.

I think he's just questioning the "jazz" part of 'Jazz Fest'.

edit: Hot damn. I had the reply window open and got distracted. You people totally rendered this reply useless.

I don't know if you just feel generally resentful of the stereotype that people over ~35 can't like good music or what, but with your "20 something indie rock dudes don't get much out of life" and your hatred of messenger bags, you're carrying around the kind of silly, unfair presumptions that people typically harbour about people they've never met.

It's also called New Orleans Jazz and Heritage festival that celebrates all things New Orleans not just the music. They have tons of local food, marketplaces, artist markets, history booths, and local culture demonstrations, etc.

Wasn't Jazz supposedly founded in New Orleans? Am I off base there?

Kinda surprised here, but in a good way. I don't listen to Buffett on a regular basis, but I have said it before: If you can't have fun at Buffett, you don't understand fun.

And Phil -- its ALWAYS been a diverse set list...Widespread and the like play all the time. Sorry if you're caught up on semantics.

I just want truth in advertising.

I went to IPO. I knew what I was getting into.

I'm going to go to the Long Grove Chocolate Festival.

Guess what? I'm gonna eat some damn chocolate.

You have to understand, Phil, that people don't like jazz anymore.

I'm not picking a fight! (except with billy g!) Jazz was once "pop music." Now, the only jazz you'll hear apart from NPR, an art gallery, or your living room, is smooth jazz. It would be way less profitable to throw an actual jazz festival with headliners that actually play jazz than it is to throw a "jazz" festival, encompassing anybody who noodles or includes a saxophone solo.

Kids, I don't like much jazz these days either, or classical.

I don't have a problem with the lineup. I don't have a problem with people going out and seeing live music, that's great.
