Ray Davies - Other People's Lives

I suppose there is no way this could have ever lived up to expectations. But that said, this is a disappointly pedestrian offering from one of my favorite songwriters of all-time.

It's competent, to be sure. Doesn't suck. But it is sadly uninspired and uninspiring.
Just really bummed about this one.

This will be in my Top 10 for the year and I don't find it uninspired at all.

To be fair, I have only given the complete album one listen. Although the singles have been heard several times. I am going to give it another spin or two. Can't give up on Ray that easily.

But so far... eh.

and when i say disappoiniment - i dont think its horrible. i just had some high expectations for it. there are some good songs, but alot of so-so tunes....

i thought blackberry belle was great front to back....i was kind of hoping for that kind of consistency again.

So what's this like? I see eMusic is going to carry it soon. Can I get an RIYL?

Definitely Top 10 material for me. It's solid from beginning to end.

Flaming Lips and Destroyer are 2 of my favorites this year. Haven't really given the Neko Case (nor Liars) enough listens, but I'm looking forward to it clicking.

If I'm really disappointed by something, it's that Chan Marsall couldn't sustain enough of the high moments on The Greatest to make it a truly, uhh, great record.

I feel like I hit a phase recently where I vastly prefer focusing on the "good side" of things and I just don't have the time to really pay much mind to reveling in my disappointment of 10-20 records a year (not that I don't have an avid dislike for, oh, 90% of what's out there).

My nomination would be Mark Lanegan & Isobel Campbell. It was my most anticipated 2006 release and I think it mostly stinks.

I third this nomination. It had one or two decent songs on it, but the rest of this put me to sleep.

y'all smokin' dat crack!

I should've known…

haha...I used to think estone and I had similar taste based on him liking van morrison, nicolai dunger and a little bit of afropop. I can't remember the last album I agreed with him on though :(

i bet we've still got some common ground. Fu and me though...we got nuthin'.

I'm not feeling the Raconteurs at all either.

Yeah, in terms of actual DISAPPOINTMENT, I agree. I just thought it was going to be so much better, especially after liking that first single so much.

np: Ass Ponys - "Fighter Pilot"

listening to this again now...and while it's not bad in any way, it is just missing that something special that made the whigs so great. not sure what exactly it is, but that's how i've felt about all of the twilight singers albums thus far.

It's John Curley on bass....and the only Twilight Singers song that approachs Afghan Whigs is their cover of Black is the Cover of my True Love's Hair

Most disappointing of 2006:
1. Flaming Lips
2. Gnarls Barkley (waay to much hype for what sounds a lot like decade-old Moby)
3. Grandaddy (I really should have known better than to get my hopes up after Todd Zilla)

Most surprisingly good:
1. Strokes
2. Band of Horses
3. Arctic Monkeys

Yeah, I only listened to it once, but I found Gnarls Barkley ot be pretty disappointing. Surprisingly bland.

Really, I don't know what any of you were expecting from that Lips album. They gave plenty of hints with "Mr. Ambulance Driver" last year, "The W.A.N.D." single, and their EPs from the past few years. Plus, the dudes are getting old, and everything Coyne has done over the past 5 or 6 years has been dangerously close to being too either cheesy, sentimental, pretentious, or "cute" for it's own. That any of it succeeds always seemed sort of miraculous. How could you not see something like this coming eventually? Maybe I'm one of the few people here who was already a little let down by Yoshimi.

I can't help but wonder how many of you will be saying the same thing about the new Radiohead. Or worse, how many of you many of will be championing it as their best album. Don't get me wrong, I'll be incredibly happy if it actually is good (especially after more than a dozen listens), but I can't say I'm expecting much.

I agree. The voice is major league, but on the whole it is so AOR that I get very bored.

I also was disappointed by Ray Davies, who I think is one of the greatest songwriters, and singers, of all time. Very mediocre.
