While waiting to see the movie The Matador, I saw a trailer for the upcoming new Sofia Coppola film, Marie Antoinette starring Kirsten Dunst and Jason Schwartzman.

Apparently, the French government granted special permission for the crew to film in the Palace of Versailles. Soundtrack includes New Order's Age Of Consent (!).

Opinions anyone?

...but he plays an effeminate, impotent King in the movie. I'm thinking not cool though I love historical movies, even bad ones.

Also, does anyone else think that Sofia Coppola has largely skated by because of her name?

I think Sofia has grown as a film director -- she definitely can stand on her own these days.

Totally. Remember Bill Murray's speech at the Golden Globes for Lost in Translation? He basically came out and said that she didn't know what the fuck she was doing. Her "direction" and shallow script and were both saved by a great DOP and Murray's improv.

But the name is all she needs. Eventually she'll become competent.

The Matador was indeed excellent.

It cemented the fact to me that Pierce Brosnan is an excellent actor. Why the hell would they not want him for the latest Bond film?

i thought it was more like him not wanting to do another bond film.

oh, and marie antoinette will probably be a bust, but the aforementioned trailer gets a thumbs up - http://www.apple.com/trailers/sony_pict ... ntoinette/

I think SC's directing is 100x greater than the acting attempt she made in GF part 3. I also look forward to this movie.

Opinions anyone?

This may be the deciding factor for many: Kirsten Dunst reportedly gets nekkid in this one. Finally.

Funny. I was going to tell the Jason fans to watch Shopgirl and then reconsider. That movie was terrible, and he was terrible in it.

I only wanna see Marie Antoinette if Dunst shits her pants when they come to pick her up to take her to the 'tine. Now that would be awesome.
I'm not just saying that off the cuff. I've read that that's what Antoinette did.

Well, at least this one will still rely on the SDTK, and not "atmosphere"

i am very down for this. big part of the reason why Eternal Sunshine gets such high marks in my book? Kirsten Dunst jumping on a bed in her knickers smoking a joint.

CRITICS REVOLT AT MARIE ANTOINETTE SCREENING

Wednesday, May 24 2006 ( showbizdata.com )

Many Cannes attendees had been forecasting that Sophia Coppola's Marie Antoinette, starring Kirsten Dunst, would turn out to be the sleeper at the festival. After an early screening for the press today (Wednesday), many agreed that it was a sleeper all right -- but in the wrong sense of the word. A thunder of boos erupted when the closing credits appeared, followed by a smattering of applause. At a news conference, Coppola insisted that she had intended to make a film that reflected life at the court of Versailles prior to the French Revolution and the life of the young queen in particular. She insisted that the film had no political intent (even though it argues that the French revolution was caused in large part by the costly decision of the king to send troops to America to support the colonists' revolt against the British). One reporter observed that it seemed ironic that $40 million had been lavished on a movie that depicts royal decadence. Producer Steve Coogan responded that $40 million does not represent a decadent film budget.
