I have a hard time with this thread, because usually when I don't like the name I never bother to listen to the band. The one I can think of are Drive-By Truckers.

And I can't even say they're good, I've only heard their most recent album and it was just okay for me.

i like the name spiritualized. i listened to them for the first time in middle school, i believe, and their name did make me think they were a christian band. but.. i like it. it suits the style of music in my opinion.

there's something about it that is very lame, like in an "i'm in a teenage high school band and this is what we call ourselves because we are fed up with society"

that's my take at least.

A terrible pun and nothing more. Shameful for such an iconic band.

yeah, I guess there is something cool about it. although I still find it kind of cheesy. it's better once you know their music and how great it is. I love them.

I like those first three (Echo & the Bunnymen always seemed fitting to me), but I agree that 764-HERO is a terrible name. Never even bothered to hear that band because of it. I can see thinking that "Modest Mouse" is kinda lame, but I think the name "Built to Spill" is fine.

I know there are a bunch of these, but here's what I can think of right now:

Godspeed You Black Emperor
Jackie-O Motherfucker
Animal Collective
XTC
Sunburned Hand of the Man (although I only like about half of their stuff, maybe less)
Wooden Wand and the Vanishing Voice (same as above)

See, this is funny. I think Godspeed You! Black Emperor is a great name. It's a bit long, but I think it certainly sets them apart.

Well, it does fit them, but it's just one of those names that sucks to say out loud.

Yeah.
I think they did take their inspiration from The Be Sharps.
