What confuses me is why you guys would want to have indie cred. It's one thing to like "good music" but it's another thing to be a Pitchfork-worshipping idiot who dresses really poorly.

For once we agree. However, I think indie cred is simply a term that is widely accepted to state that any given individual has good taste in music. A bit snobbish I admit, but it's just easier than typing all that out.

So i'm invited to dinner with my dad's boss and his wife, among other employees (the company loves family and encourages family to go to shit like this). Dad's boss is a very wealthy dude, but doesn't even compare to his wife.

This woman is rich. Her dad basically invented modern cement, so she doesn't exactly have it hard (her net worth is about half a bil).

So i get talking to this woman, and she says she was just at 'some music festival' in the US called Coachella..."I don't know if you've heard of it". Then we get talking more and more and in July she's heading to that festival in Valencia 'cause she's an MC5 fan from way back when. She loves Depeche Mode, the Strokes, Radiohead, and all that shit, and her 12 year old son is in a band with the son of the singer from UK Squeeze. Shit freaked me out.

Did you make a good impression on this woman? Snag free flights on their jet to these festivals? You've got to get something out of this connection. Shit, my mum works with a doctor who flies up to my hometown from Sydney every fortnight in his jet to do a clinic. They get along well and the doctor has since offered free lifts (and provided them) if any of us need to go/ get back from home on the same day he's flying.

So I say, you need to volunteer to go to more of these dinner things. At the very least there's all that free alcohol

I was using the term 'indie cred' ironically in an attempt to boost my 'indie cred'.

My roommate in college knew Donovan of SG and occasionally hung out with them back in his Zeppelin's going days.

i see indie cred differently. you can have good taste in music without having indie cred and people who have indie cred can have terrible taste in music. when i use indie in that sense i mean the whole look, the whole scene, not just music. someone could have indie cred but their favorite band could be "bright eyes," you see what i mean?

i'm not sure if i have indie cred, but i like to think i have decent taste in music.

Yeah. I totally understand what you're saying. However, my perception of the use of it in this thread was that it meant something more like, "I can't believe that this rich older woman likes decent bands (or just that she likes music that's not maintsream)". I think I may have assumed.

I think you're dead on here...in this context indie cred means that she knows a little bit. Or perhaps a lot as is the case.

I just use it sarcastically 99.9% of the time in real life.

Did Haq search these terms too? You would have been higher on the naughty lists.

I got on the lists for for use of "jail" when I've only used it facetiously or when talking about actual jail. These search things don't take intent into account, just useage, actual or quoted.
