(1) upon perusal of Everyday Music's used cd bin (organized by day cd's get dropped off, then alphabetically), last Tuesday was a stellar day for someone who must have gotten rid of their entire Alice Cooper cd collection. I couldn't say if any of the cd's were good ones, as I'm not that familiar with his music, but it was weird to get to the C's, and 75% of them were Alice Cooper cd's. Thursday proved the same for someone who (smartly) got rid of their Brooks & Dunn collection. Also, I think one of the cd's we can add to our growing list of "most likely to find in the used cd bin" is Godsmack's self-titled album, with the girl with all the face piercings on the cover.

(2) I was able to find NIN's "With Teeth" for a mere $4.25. When listening to it for review, I realized the cd in the case was a live cd, not "With Teeth." But I did find the new Starlight Mints for $6 and the Rakes for $5.

(3) It's sad how much I think about all of you when looking through used cd's-- I saw the Stones' "A Bigger Bang" and immediately thought of Loogar and Yail. I saw Gilberto Gil and thought of billy g. I saw the "Punk Goes 90s" cd and thought of the thread that was started by Naked.

(4) Does anyone have the Bad Brains "I and I Survived" dub cd? Is it worthwhile?

(5) I was sad to hear the 88's song "Coming Home" on a new Target commercial.

(6) Why is the Massive Attack song "Angel" never used properly in film? I always thought it would be good for a soundtrack, but lo and behold, they used in that goddamned Flight of the Phoenix movie with Dennis Quaid. So inappropriate in so many ways.

The one I picked up was a promotional copy, with a clearly worded "Not for Resale" on the front, but I got it.

Oh! You should have bought the early Cooper albums - great stuff!

Love It To Death, Killer, School's Out, Billion Dollar Babies....I need to replace the very old and worn cassette copies I have of these from my teenage years.

So I hope you're enjoying that Gilberto Gil now.

And I know what you mean, its pretty unavoidable. Amoeba holds an auction every saturday with all proceeds (with an amoeba match) going to Katrina victims. Some really cool stuff and a lot of junk.

One of the last times I was there for it, they were auctioning off something Duran Duran related. I think it might have been a Rio lunchbox or something like that. Of course, I immediately thought of you. I thought about buying it for you but I didn't think it was likely something you'd have much use for

I appreciate the thought, but I am relieved that you chose not to buy it. I'm crazy for DD, yes, but not DAT CRAZY. I'm sure some well-meaning Duranie with a full-size John Taylor tattoo on her shoulder and a circa-1984 femullet ended up buying it instead.

And no, I didn't get the Gilberto Gil.

i did some digging over the weekend and came across a little shop that had a ton of bootlegs - the clash in london, television in paris, bauhaus untitled, the stranglers untitled, echo & the bunnymen/new order tour, etc. the rub was that they were all extremely expensive.

one odd find was a copy of rolling stones' sticky fingers in cyrillic. i'm pretty sure it was a bootleg. i don't know what the story is on distribution of rock music LPs in the USSR, but i'm guessing that this one wasn't official.

it's always interesting to see what is obviously one lot of sold records in a bin. in the past year, i have come across every talking heads LP 3-4 times. and then there was the best record digging experience ever, which unfortunately came on a day when i'd just dropped $800 on my car and had $17 in my pocket: peel sessions from wire, the damned, siouxsie, redskins, etc., almost every undebatably classic punk LP from between 77 and 82, and a handful of mid-80s new wave and shoegazer.

Amazing discs. I would add Casino, too, if you find it. Simply amazing trilogy when Di Meola was at his fusion-y best. Tour De Force- Live ain't bad, neither. 8)

Random things I noticed this past weekend...

Everyone kept wishing me a "Happy Mother's Day" which is weird to me because 1) I don't have children [nor do I look like a mom type] and 2) I don't have a mother [*not for a long time, sigh].

*This must be akin to the annoyed/icky feeling Jewish folks experience as everyone wishes them "Merry Christmas" every year.

I guess it just made me sad (for point no. 2, I don't want children so point no. 1 doesn't matter).

If you get the chance to pick up the album of him, Paco de Lucia, and John McLaughlin in SF called Friday Night In San Francisco" then pick it up. Some of the best classical guitar playing I've ever heard. All of them on the top of their game. Its been remastered and the sound is perfection. Each guitar pluck/strum/beat is absolutely amazing.

Great call, a friend of mine burned this for me.. and I must admit, that I like it, but the staying power isnt there for me. *Now* Im not a guitar player and so Im sure the playing goes right over my head, but still. However, I am going to dig this out tonight and play it.. now actually

It was there, Bob... I looked up the cover on amazon.com, and I remember seeing that one. Why, pray tell, should I get this particular one?

It seems to me when using popular music that unless the director is very involved in every step of the way including picking the music & final cut, then 9 times out of 10 it's misused. So some movie made by a studio lackey (John Moore in this case) you can count on the music being a mess. Where as Scorsese, Tarantino, Wes Anderson, Cameron Crowe etc. you know it's spot on.

So you can send it to me, and I can finally have it for the first time since I wore out the 8-track as a young teen. I will definitely make it worth your while! Heck, you can even buy it, rip it, YSI it to me, and sell it back. That would be totally fine with me.

Not so quick, Mr... I didn't go by the store last night. Just didn't have time. Somehow I seriously doubt there's going to be a run for that particular cd, but I've been wrong before. I won't forget though... next time I'm in the area, I'll try and swing by and check again.
