I was listening to Trans-Europe Express, one of the all time great pieces of 20th century art, tonight but I had momentarily forgotten about one quite alarming section on the album.

During the song 'Show Room Dummies' I was struck by a familiar but none-the-less mind bending terror. You see during the song the lyrics go... '

We go into a club
And there we start to dance
We are showroom dummies
We are showroom dummies

Now those words might not be especially frightning in themselves but when I hear those lyrics I think about being in a club and leaving the dance floor to go to the bathroom, and I'll be walking down the corridor to the Gents and I'll see a group of showroom dummies (perhaps looking much like the ones in the Volvo commercials) throwing the doormen at the enterance out of the way with their supernatural showroom dummy strength and then stiffly walking up towards the dance floor, passing a terrified me in the corridor.

On entering the main dance floor these abominations would send panicing revellers fleeing in some primal state of dread. I would briefly look into the dance floor again witnessing erratic, inhuman, ghastly dancing from these lifeless yet animated mannequins, in the process exposing myself to a double dose of quailing fear.

It's pretty scary if you think about it.

But then Kraftwerk have always been a frightning sort of band. I dare anyone to listen to 'The Voice of Energy' from the Radioactivity album with the lights switched off and not do a little bit of pee in their pants.

For some reason, Cat's In The Cradle scares the bejeezus out of me. I think I was napping when I was little, and it was on the radio, and something else freaked me out, and it just got imprinted as "scary," dispite all evidence to the contrary.

I used to get freaked out by 10cc's "I'm Not in Love" where the woman/thing whispers "big boys don't cry."

btw, Konstantin, I understand your fear. We were looking after a friend's cat a few years ago, and my husband had to go into the basement to look for something. He opened their closet door down there, in the dark, and a full size mannequin fell on him. It's a miracle he didn't shit his pants.

Frightening moments? How about this from R. Van Winkle "The Horny Song"

whatcha tryin to do, make the Ice melt?
don't you know my cream is good for your health?
you know you wanna shake what your mamma gave ya
you're getting real hot, now I'm gonna spray ya
rub it in like lotion
juices flowin everywhere
like water in the ocean
you got that hourglass figure
uh
all the right moves
and ya know I wannaa dig ya
got 31 flavors, know what I mean?
and I wanna take a dip in your ice cream

Here I come, here I come Here I come, here I come Here I come, here I come
Here I come, here I come Here I come, here I come Here I come, here I come
Here I come, here I come Here I come, here I come

know I'll be the one to kick this shit off
and crank it up like a 250
engine in a motorcross
and make ya feel it girl
till ya get sick with it
and all that junk in your trunk
don't be stingy with it
and I'm gonna make it all good like the weekend
you got enough for yourself and for all my friends
and it's enough of me to go round like the globe
set it up like a tent, watch it unfold
I see your eyes glistening for the benji's
but you ain't gotta fake it
I just want you to shake it
break me off a piece of that action like Jackson
I ain't trying to hit it
and I ain't trying to wax it
picture you and me on the beach and you be
climbing up this tall coconut tree
all I wanna do is hump with it and make you scream
and eat you up
as I floss with your g-string

Here I come, here I come Here I come, here I come Here I come, here I come
Here I come, here I come Here I come, here I come Here I come, here I come
Here I come, here I come Here I come, here I come

"Indirect Inquiries" from 154...the end, when all the different voices, layer upon layer of voices uttering the words; "you'd been defaced". Verry creepy.

Not quite as creepy, but Joy Division's "I Remember Nothing", when the glass breaks, makes me pretty uncomfortable.

What about the lyrics to Nomeansno's Dad? Yeesh.

I went home, I was feeling so alone
I was late, it was my mistake
I want to my room and sat there in the gloom
I know I've been bad, I know he'll be mad
I hear him coming down the hall
And there's nowhere to go, nowhere at all
I've been had, it was my mistake
He opens the door, his eyes are full of hate

DAD NO! DAD, LEAVE ME ALONE! DAD, NO! DAD, LET ME GO!
DAD NO! DAD, LEAVE ME ALONE! DAD, NO! OH, MY GOD, NO!
NO!

My mom comes rushing in, she says "Please, don't hurt him"
DAD gives her a kick, he slaps her around a bit, he says:
"SHUT UP, YOU BITCH! SHUT UP, YOU BITCH!
I'll KILL YOU! I'll KILL YOU! SHUT UP, I'll KILL YOU!"

DAD keeps hitting mom's face, and there's blood all over the place
I said, 'Please DAD, please! It's my mistake!
I'm the one that's bad! I'm the one that's bad!
Don't hit her DAD! Don't hit her DAD!"

DAD NO! DAD, LEAVE HER ALONE! DAD, LET HER GO! NO!
NO! DAD NO! DAD, LET HER GO! OH, MY GOD! NO! NO!

He went into my sister's room and he locked the door
He said, "I hate you, but I love you more."
I heard her crying as the light went out
I heard her scream, I had to shout:

DAD NO! DAD, LEAVE HER ALONE! DAD, LET HER GO! NO!
NO! DAD NO! DAD, LET HER GO! OH, MY GOD! NO! NO!

I'm seriously considering leaving home.

I've got a good one. Gives me the creeps.

"Warm Leatherette" By The Normal (later covered by Grace Jones)

See the breaking glass
In the underpass
See the breaking glass
In the underpass

Warm leatherette

Hear the crushing steel
Feel the steering wheel
Hear the crushing steel
Feel the steering wheel

Warm leatherette

Warm leatherette

Warm leatherette
Melts on your burning flesh
You can see your reflection
In the luminescent dash

Warm leatherette

A tear of petrol
Is in your eye
The hand brake
Penetrates your thigh
Quick -- Let's make love
Before you die

On warm leatherette
Warm leatherette

Warm leatherette
Warm leatherette
Warm leatherette

I listen to him a whole damn lot, and realise that -- though his subject matter is oft dark and frightening -- most of his work is laced with sadistic humour and wit, so I don't find it thaat frightening. It lends depth to songs, so they're not just 'scarey'. Some people might find them frightening though.

His earlier stuff though, especially on the bad seeds first record, and his stuff with BP, is a trifle frightening.

His throaty screams at the start of The Hair Shirt always freak me out a bit. That song is ace.

Just wanna express pleasure that Nomeansno and Fatima Mansions are mentioned on Obner. Yay.

"Dad" is the ultimate "my parents are fucked up" 80's tune, superceding even Suicidal Tendencies "Institutionalized."

And songs like Fatima Mansions "Pack Of Lies" are crucial to my music experience.

When I was a kid I was terrified of Gordon Lightfoot's "Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald" because, well, it's about a horrible boating
accident.

Also, "Strawberry Fields" and "I Am the Walrus" scared the shit out of me, yet I listened to them over and over on my Superman record player.
