Kudos to the very few souls who put the Legends on their lists, sad that they won't crack the top 20. I couple that I bet I'd like a whole lot but never got my grubby paws on include The Stars and that Jem album. I'll be on the hunt in 2005 for those two.

1. Legends, The - Up Against The Legends
2. Arcade Fire, The - Funeral
3. Snow Patrol - Final Straw
4. Interpol - Antics
5. Lali Puna - Faking The Books
6. Ridgway, Stan - Snakebite: Blacktop Ballads and Fugitive Songs
7. Miss Kittin - I.Com
8. De/Vison - Six Feet Underground
9. Walkmen, The - Bows + Arrows
10. Moonbabies - The Orange Billboard
11. American Music Club - Love Songs For Patriots
12. Razorlight - Up All Night
13. Killers, The - Hot Fuss
14. Old Canes - Early Morning Hymns
15. Pinback - Summer In Abaddon
16. Libertines, The - The Libertines
17. Clinic - Winchester Cathedral
18. Radio 4 - Stealing Of A Nation
19. Air - Talkie Walkie
20. Kasabian - Kasabian

such as it is...

I'm not sure how this argument keeps coming up but Allmusic and Pitchfork both have it listed as a 2004 release and when I went to the record store to see if I could order it in August or September of 2004 I was told it hadn't been released yet. Maybe it was only released in the states in 2004 or something but I have yet to find anywhere that says it was a 2003 release.

It really is a lot of fun. I don't know exactly what Shatner's trying to do on Has Been, but he sure knows how to write entertaining songs.

He's trying to have one last commentary about his life before he gets old but is masking it in serio-comic pomp. You don't do a bit about finding your wife's body and intend it just to be Weird Al-funny.

There's some baffling and undefinable near-genuis on this album.

I considered putting it on my Top 20, but didn't. Possibly because the CD defies good/bad categorization. It exists within its own Sphere of Shat.

Capt. James T. Kirk is doing his next record with Shat?

Score one for Buddyhead.

Just out of curiosity, where did you come up with that? A quick google search showed a July UK release date coupled with the October State side release. Clearly those aren't the only two countries in the world but I can't find any mention of a 2003 release date for that album.

the back of my cd says labrador records 2003.

i'm really not trying to be anal about it or anything, i love the album and love that they are getting well-deserved attention this year. just offering up the reason why they aren't on my '04 top 20.

That doesn't mean anything. I've seen records come out in 2004 that say 2005 (I think the Gwen Stefani comes to mind), and (more commonly) vice versa (the album comes out the following year) -- that's just when the songs got copyrighted, not when the album came out.

And it's anal retentive. Anal just means having to do with the anus. What you're doing is being anal retentive.

As am I.

Strongly considered putting these in my Top 20. Watt is brilliant, but a nagging tiny part of me is annoyed at how MUCH he embraced prog with this one. It just seems so contrary and smartass to have THAT MUCH ORGAN. Love the album though.

I had the same question about Delays 'Faded Seaside Glamour', the back of my CD says it's 2003 but the people here assured me it was a 2004 release so I believe them. I didn't think you were being anal retentive, I was just curious where the argument comes from.

Here's my list, as of right now. This was difficult as always, especially since I just barely got a couple releases (Arcade Fire, Pinback) that would probably climb even higher given time. Also didn't get around to hearing everything I wanted too (Drive-By Truckers, Delgados). But with the deadline looming, this is as good as it's going to get.

1. Rogue Wave - Out Of The Shadow
2. Secret Machines - Now Here Is Nowhere
3. Ambulance Ltd. - LP
4. Walkmen, The - Bows + Arrows
5. Arcade Fire, The - Funeral
6. Comets On Fire - Blue Cathedral
7. Vanderslice, John - Cellar Door
8. Smith, Elliott - From A Basement On The Hill
9. Modest Mouse - Good News For People Who Love Bad News
10. Pinback - Summer In Abaddon
11. Snow Patrol - Final Straw
12. Sonic Youth - Sonic Nurse
13. U2 - How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb
14. R.E.M. - Around The Sun
15. West, Kayne - The College Dropout
16. Cooper Temple Clause, The - Kick Up the Fire, And Let the Flames Break Loose
17. Air - Talkie Walkie
18. Keane - Hopes And Fears
19. Kweller, Ben - On My Way
20. Guided By Voices - Half Smiles Of The Decomposed

ps. Thanks so much to shmoo, haq, z, etc. for all the hard work putting this together. Very well done!
