I vote yes. Im very pleased with what Ive heard so far this year, and I felt like I had to search to fill out a decent top 20 for last year.

I haven't heard all that much I like so far this year outside of Willie Nile.

I like the records that I like a lot more this year than last, that's for sure.

Off the top of my head, I've heard 5 things I like this year (Frank Black, Norman & Nancy Blake, Ojos De Brujo, Candi Staton & Witch). But I'm not sure if I had heard that many at this point last year or not.

I tend to always think its a weak year until I catch up with things in the last quarter of the year and suddenly find a dozen or more things that I actually do like.

A lot of my favorite bands are releasing/have released albums this year so, even though I have had absolutely no money and only bought maybe 3 records from this year so far, yeah, it's better.

Its a little surprising to me that people think its a much better year, not because it is or isn't. I don't think I've seen one or two albums that people are going gangbusters for though.

Walkmen has its supporters.

I think alot of people like the new Built to Spill

Frank Black and the DBT's are beloved by the normal crew.

But is there a consensus favorite or an album or two that lots of people really love? I don't think I've noticed the level of adulation for anything yet this year that you see towards something in most years or am I forgetting something?

I've been disappointed with a lot of albums this year, so I vote no. There's maybe 3 or 4 albums I've heard so far that I really like.

yeah you're right I guess...I keep forgetting that one because I assume I wouldn't like it. still I'm not sure its as worshipped/praised discussed as lots of things from prior years.

Yeah, it's certainly not reached the heights of Meadowlands hyperbole--the gold standard in this category, I'd say.

AFX - Chosen Lords
Band Of Horses - Everything All The Time
Belong - October Language
Boris - Pink (whether this is a 2006 release or not is debatable, im including it anyway)
Cat Power - The Greatest
Embrace - This New Day
Mogwai - Mr Beast
Mono - You Are There
Mountains - Sewn
Neko Case - Fox Confessor Brings The Flood
Young And Sexy - Panic When You Find It

Yeah, I could have almost told you that new releases by the Strokes, DBT's, Belle and Sebastian, Built To Spill & Frank Black would be higly rated by me before the year started because I'm a big fan.

Otherwise, its kind of a mixed bag so far.

I always buy my albums later in the year. As of now, I'd say I wanted to buy more albums this time last year than I do this year. I really want the Radiohead and the Thom Yorke solo album, but other than that I can't think of any album I'm still desperate to own.
I'm guessing by August or September, my mind will change.

Woot. First time I've seen anyone mention them on here.

I started a thread when I first picked this album up and it received literally no replies.

Same here.

I think I've bought fewer new releases so far this year, but the quality is better.

last year was pretty miserable for me...the things i was looking forward todidn't deliver as hard(spoon for instance). this year all the big names areputting outgreat stuff. no real disappointments yet in2006.

Some nice surprises early on and a flattening out of late, but optimistic. 2005 seemed to hit me better towards the end. I wonder if this will be the same. I definitely have some favorite in the till already.

It's been an extremely slow year.

I love these:

Super Numeri "The Welcome Table"
Spank Rock "YoYoYoYoYoYo"
Major Stars "Syntoptikon"
Six Organs of Admittance "The Sun Awakens"
Gnarls Barkley "St. Elsewhere"
Loka "Fire Shepherds"
Daedelus "Denies the Days Demise"

There are some others, but I've been drinking scotch for the last 8 hours.

Ah the statistical wonder that is Konstantiranks!

Albums scoring over 7.00 ('Good' albums)
2005 Up to May 19 - 11
2006 Up to May 19 - 10

Albums scoring over 7.25 ('Very Good' albums)
2005 Up to May 19 - 6
2006 Up to May 19 - 4

Albums scoring over 7.50 ('Excellent' albums)
2005 Up to May 19 - 2
2006 Up to May 19 - 0

I do declare 2006 to be not quite as good as 2005 - so far.

Tool and Built to Spill are better than anything on my 2005 list, so I voted yes. 2005 was chock full of good-not-great releases though.
