Chris, you're just mad cos the docs finally got you on enough meds to leave the grounds of Redlands, and now the precious Obnii are shitting all over the one movie you REALLY WANNA SEE and since you can't do that now, you are resorting to being what I called everyone earlier in the thread: Comic Book Guy.

Go home and get your fucking shine box

I have to have a large bag of salt laden, sopped in butter popcorn and a coke so big you have to bring it in on a flat bed truck when I see a movie.

I don't care if I've just had a 96 ounce steak dinner and I'm so full I'm about to vomit. I still have to have it. Even when watching Schindler's List or United 93. Gimmie the shit.

I'll go see this movie even if it's suck ass. I was intrigued by this book. Any book that gets under the skin of the radical conservatives is doing something right.

I care because I sensed the potential for high art (or at least medium art) given the themes and people involved. To hear that it isn't is rather disappointing. I may see and still enjoy it, but I will likely also still be left wanting.

As has been said, sometimes the movie outdoes the book. Lord of the Rings, anyone?

What I meant was, it won't be Poopoo Bear's adventures in Tickle Town, starring Steve Buscemi and Scarlet Johansen, animated by Robert Rodriguez, with special guest scenes in live action film by Spike Jonze with a SDTK of remixed Joy Division songs remixed by Danger Mouse.

Its a popcorn movie about a run-of-the-mill mystery gussied up with some religious overtones...you know, The Firm, with Jesus as unbilled co-star.

I just think its funny that this movie is downright offensive to a lot of people around here, because you know, some of the proles got and read a book.

I just read the Chicago Sun Times review of it.

Roger Ebert gave it three stars saying that it's a friggin film with a crazy plot which is what most people pay money to see. He said he doesn't expect to always go see movies that have truthful overly serious plots.

Reiterating the Senators point- It's a THRILLER. It's supposed to be a fun, somewhat mindless movie to go see in the summer. It's not supposed to really lead us to The Holy Grail fer cryin out loud.

I loved Ebert's take on it.

I think some of the critics that have already weighed in really expect it to be some sort of gospel of truth.

(oh yeah, and I found it funny as hell when I opened the paper to his review just now that his headline read "Preposterous Story, Entertaining Film". Hey, that's what I said!!)

It's official. Georgia has hijacked this thread. Although, I gotta give you all credit, you have managed to stay somewhat linked to the thread itself (i.e. movies)

This is one of those things that really bugs me about the radical conservatives, particularly christians. They always run off at the mouth about things and then change their sentiments later. Falwell questioned MLK's motives and then changed it up.

The greastest irony for me, in this sort of thing, is like what happened when Nikos Kazantzakis' book The Last Temptation of Christ came out, and later the movie, these same folks were outraged and boycotting and all this other crap without ever READING THE BOOK! The whole preface to the book talks about the intent of the author, who was a devout eastern orthodox believer, was to write a story that intensified the life, purpose, and meaning of Christ. It wasn't to be blasphemous; it was to increase the understanding of, according to general christian doctrine, what Christ did. I have this argument with my father twice a year almost. He is a leaner towards this radical conservative business. Jumping the gun and condemning anything that mentions Christ before getting any first hand experience in it. I swear, "we" preach against gossip, but we are some of the worst gossipers (as it relates to this sort of thing) in the country.

Anyway, your comment just sparked this in me. I know this is rather unrelated, but I had some verbal diarrhea.

Shitting on the film just has to be a piece of the backlash that Americans create against anything that we love. Maybe this movie has come slightly too late.

Calm down now, Farley. I'm not taking sides, just pointing out that in the world of shit-tossing Bloor throws a better quality dung.

And you're getting "popularity" and "hype" mixed up. You're also assuming there's only one kind of movie - the Hollywood blockbuster crafted from the wisdom of some soon-to-be-unemployed 28 year old studio exec, whose sole qualification is that he once had an uncle who worked the boom on ALF - and that everything else equals failure. And you're wrong - but you won't know that because you're the filmdom equivalent of a Britney fan.

But let's not give too many of these Wes Anderson taint-swingers credit for taste in film, k?
