I agree with g-bag. If the Long Beach crew want to do a set of all Sublime stuff, fine. They're more or less doing covers then, anyway. And they're not using the old band's name to advertise or draw people into the shows.

It's a matter of respect to your old bandmate, in my opinion. If they were to continue calling themselves Sublime and touring under that moniker, it's like saying "you know what? Brad wasn't really that important to the band."

that's the point...without brad they are no longer sublime so it would be false to call it sublime.

and don't rip on them for touring shortly after brad's death with sublime songs....they didn't have new material yet. he died before it came out so sublime never got to tour with those songs. they needed some time to get their act together and what that is for them is touring. the only songs they had were sublime.

It seems to me that stuff like this has a lot more to do with money than music. Alice in Chains is a lot more marketable than any ohter name that they might come up with.

But do cover bands deserve that much draw and headlining marquees simply because two of the members were in the original band? Not in my eyes, thanks. I understand the point you and g-bag are raising and agree with it to an extent. I just think early LBDAS is a really bad supporting example.

What changing the name actually does is acknowledge Brad as the driving force in that band. That's fine. As another exmaple (IMHO) Queen isn't Queen without Freddie Mercury. However, I don't have an issue with Brian May & co. touring as Queen; I know they don't mean to disrespect Freddie. It also makes a statement that the music is more important than any one individual. Perhaps, at some leve, AiC is saying the same thing.

Technically Queen is touring as "Queen + Paul Rodgers" (pronounced "plus" instead of "and"), so they're actually "The rest of Queen, everyone knows Freddie's dead, with that guy from Bad Company who's still in shape, unlike other old rockers in their 50's."
