I was loitering at the bookstore and picked up a crappy, snarky Brit music magazine that featured the "50 Worst Records Ever Made." It had some of the usual suspects, and among them was this Beck record.

I know lists are stupid, but I wasn't even aware of any hatred toward Midnight Vultures. It's not my favorite, but still.

Did I miss the public outrage when Vultures came out?

This was my first Beck CD. It's not my favorite, but I don't remember any backlash.

So I'm pretty much useless.

In hindsight it was actually an ok album, at the time I remember we threw it out the college radio station window...literally.

Bad idea that hasn't aged well, but nowhere near deserving of such an anti-accolade.

The song Debra is enough to make the whole album worthwhile.

I can't say I like it very much now, if I ever really did, his music in general hasn't aged well for me.

I still like 'Debra' though.

I haven't listened to it in years but I was always a fan of "Nicotine and Gravy", "Milk and Honey", and of course the slow jam.

But, whatever year it came out I remember it being rocked at parties all summer long.

I thought it was a pretty good record. Certainly not deserving to be on a "worst of" list.

But then again NME gave my favorite Stereolab album (I own 'em all) a 0/10. What do they know?

I knew someone would ask, shouldda just posted it.

"Cobra and Phases Group Play Voltage in the Milky Night"

edit: I know a lot of Lab fans didn't dig this one, but I think it's really their most brilliant---it builds on everything else they had done up until that point.

haha. Even though I don't have or have respect for NME because I know nothing of "them", I can guaruntee I will never listen to this album. I mean, what gets a zero out of ten?

Yeah, my only negative on the album is that I just heard it too goddamn much at parties (especially when Hulty lived in the Highlands) in those days.

Pretty good record though. Maybe 4th or 5th in the Beck canon.

Um, something brilliant, over their heads, not in keeping with "the good old Stereolab we thought we could rely on to churn out the same old stuff" and, I guess, ahead of its time.

I am mostly kidding around. I mean, it didn't even get a 1 just for actually making a record with actual music on it. haha. It just strikes me funny. It's like whoever rated it was asked to because he/she/they have a personal vendetta against the band. I still don't think it's possible to get a 0 out of 10.

:) I kind of took it as a sign that it was a good album---i.e. it provoked something. (But I liked the record before I knew about the rating) And NME sucks so much that I'm happy to like an album they hate. Heh.

Absolutely love that record. Fun as hell, and a unfuckwithable party record.
