it's either too abstract for its own good or makes me think it's a prince copy too much for me to completely dig. for this, i'll have to side with e-stone: my least fav beck album.

While MV might've been some of yr party albums, we were rockin' Wilco's Summerteeth, Handsome Boy Modeling School and of course Prince Paul.

Just out of curiosity I looked up what came out and ranked on year end lists in 99 and came across the Pazz and Jop for the year. MV was #3 behind Moby and Magnetic Fields.

so it's pretty much your least favorite beck record?

I can't imagine any of those depressing-ass albums topping this one or Odelay.

It's better than the horrible Mutations but not completely without merit. It lacks focus.

Yeah, Wilco was definitley getting tons of play around then but I was in a massive Stones/Dylan phase around then also. I picked up a lot of albums on that list in the next year.

Moby. Jesus. Forgot how inescapable that record was that year. The man who introduced the Blue Man Group to the world.

I have tried with that Handsome Boy record. Hate it.

i have love for this record; while it's not as consistent as i might like, the opener along is worth the price of admission; i wish they had more pop/jazz/rhythm freakouts like that one. and while that may sound like a standard element of the stereolab catalogue, that song did it in an entirely different way.

There's also
"Emergency Kisses"
"The Free Design"
and
"Come And Play In The Milky Night"

Whoa. Never realized there's a track called "Blue Milk" on there. Duh.

Interesting that Jason Faulkner played bass on that tour. At least when he played SNL that year.

Yeah, it's like the 5th best Beck album after Odelay, One Foot in the Grave, Mellow Gold, and - just barely - Mutations. It absolutely beats the shit out of his last two albums.

I thought I went to school with some pretentious fucks, but I'm really glad I didn't go to Flying Rabbit's school. Pretty much everyone I knew was into Midnite Vultures, and yeah, it was rocked at parties that whole summer long where, thank God, no one tried to put on fucking Handsome Boy Modeling School. However, in the past 5 or 6 years, I've probably only listened to MV a handful of times.

Also, I was really into that Stereolab album that polly mentioned at the time. I do remember a lot of people turning their noses up at that one, but they were mostly fans of the older, droney 'Lab. I love that really long track on that album that is basically three different songs stitched together.

He had that little dark-haired dude on bass on that tour. The guy that plays guitar for Beck looks a little like Faulkner...

Absolutely not. I love this record. He wanted to do a silly funky party record and he did. It isn't supposed to be a serious artistic statement or anything.

It was a good idea that only Beck could pull off, but honestly, the songs just aren't that great.

Its definitely not as good as Odelay or Mutations. I would probably throw on Sea Change or Mellow Gold over Midnite Vultures, but likely only listen to one track off each album ("Lost Cause" and "Pay No Mind").

One Foot In The Grave only gets play if it comes up on random, but its ok.

So yeah, I'd say Midnite Vultures is probably tied with Guero as the 4th or 5th best Beck Album.

And why the fuck do I own everything by this guy? I'm not THAT big of a fan.

Yeah, I like Summerteeth, too, but not so much for parties. I said that more in response to the throwing the CD out of the window thing. And Handsome Boy Modeling School.

That is my question about Beck as well. I almost bought Guero the other day, just to fucking have all the albums....

all the albums I don't listen to ;)

No shit, I feel the exact same way. I think the only thing I listen to semi-regularly is Odelay and some of Mellow Gold everything else barely gets played. I even own Stereopathetic Soul Manure for fuck's sake.

Good call on avoiding Guero, Loogs. You chose wisely.
