man, a hard one to RIYL. i'll leave that to billy g and Billzebub.

they do remind me of a band from the "madchester" era called The New Fast Automatic Daffodils. well, i should say that the New FAD's remind me of the Wedding Present, but since i heard them backwards...well you know what I'm saying. anyways, they had a minor hit with a song called "Stockholm". i wonder if anyone on here remembers this band?

as a followup, Gedge is leader of both the Weddoes and Cinerama but their sound is quite different. Cinerama is his wuss pop vehicle and the Weddoes is the more indie rock vehicle. Its kinda like saying The Jam RIYL: The Style Council. Not only does it not really work but a lot of hardcore Weddoes fans hate Cinerama (even if perhaps a little irrationally).

I'm hard pressed to come up with a comparison especially since their sound changed alot over their catalog....they started out a jangly guitar rock band (Georges Best era), transformed into a faster and harder edged wall of sound guitar rock band and then into a more poppy sound towards the end of their career. I've got nothing other than that they are pretty great and Seamonsters is their best.

this is one of those situations where I'm just go ahead and say the band is shit based entirely on their name.

I'm gonna just go ahead and not argue based entirely on the one NFAD album I used to own.

Billy G's pretty spot on there. The RIYL early on would have been The Fall and The Buzzcocks, though the sound was more jittery and frenetically shiny sounding. There's also some similarities to James, though only here and there. The style changed at times dependant to some exent on the lead guitarist.

Cinerama became The Weddoes again by default after Gedge started up playing WP songs at gigs.

I'll get a couple of songs up in a bit.

I'm not gonna defend the band or their name, but - as a trivia note - The New Fast Automatic Daffodils got their name from a billboard advertising a new car called the Daffodil.

Wow, an RIYL is really tough, they're a band that has few peers. The temptation is to list the various bands they've covered--Orange Juice, Close Lobsters, Pavement, et al. They've run the gammut from crisp guitar-driven pop (George Best, Bizzaro, Saturnalia) to heavier, fuzzier, distortion-driven tracks (Hit Parade singles, Seamonsters, Watusi).

The one theme, and one of Gedge's true strengths is his ability to write about heartbreak--it infuses the Weddoes stuff, as well as Cinerama. He captures the anger, the despair, the denial, the pleading--all with great poignancy.

My favorite by far is George Best, there's not a weak track on it, and song for song it's better than any other record ever made--it's my Listmania number one. Second is Saturnalia, it's in the same vein, and marked a return to George Best form after several distortion-driven records. Bizarro would be third.

The Wedding Present are also one of the last great singles bands--their b-sides are a trove of extraordinary covers, alternate takes, even an ep sung entirely in Gedge's ancestral Ukranian.

I've seen 'em live a number of times, and they've never disappointed me.

great band. i don't know how well it's justified (kinda like how weezer got unfortunately lumped in with the emo crowd a while ago) but earlier WP also has been asssociated with the indie/jangle/twee scene... I have a comp that's got WP, BMX Bandits, the Vasalines, etc.

George Best and Bizzaro rank up there as my favs.
