Tivo is a recording device for recording programs off the telly.

but more than that, can't you program it to record shows every week, and it stores it in a memory rather than having to deal with vhs tapes?

I think/assume the reason we don't have it here is that a) digital free to air tv is still pretty much non-existent, and b) only 25% of households have pay tv (I'm also assuming you use it on digital broadcasts, not analogue)

And I won't even go into how I'm pretty much going to miss all of the final week cos of uni games. Grrr

It is god.

Mine is actually the Comcast HD Box/Dual tuner DVR but same thing.

It records episodes of Miami Vice for me while I sleep.

I'm getting this next week. I had Tivo briefly a few weeks ago, but the quality using RCA cables was abysmal. That's all I could use with my cable box

It is THE RAD.

Tivo + DVD Recorder = Love

Only problem is going to someone's house that doesn't have one.

You seen the previews for Miami Vice with Jamie Foxx and Colin Ferrel?

And TiVo is the most wonderful invention that has ever taken place.

The digital audio outputs on the HD/DVR boxes can be fucked up so make sure you test out your surround sound (assuming you are running an optical or coax audio signal from your cable box to a surround sound receiver) before the Comcast cronies leave your house. I never had this problem when I had just an HD box but I've had two different DVR/HD boxes and even now some channels dont broadcast in the right surround sound.

I use component for video but I really want to pony up for an HDMI cable. Just havent gotten around to it yet.

It does not need to be digital, analog records fine. In fact, you have to get a special, very expensive TIVO to record digital

You can do some pretty sweet hacks to it if you're willing to disassemble the box and hook it up to your computer. TivoWeb is the coolest.

Yes. I was given a DVD recorder for Christmas and I'm recording and burning stuff left and right for friends.

So cool.

I have been asking my IT guy here at work to set this up for me. You can literally browse stuff that's going to be on TV and program what you want to see from work.

The greatest invention since the remote control.

So how does tv work for you guys?

How many free to air channels do you got?

How many people have cable?

We have 5 free to air channels, and then every capital city has 1 of their own stations. And practically no one has cable.

Just off the top of my head, I think ATL has 10 or 11 over the air channels (ABC, Fox, NBC, CBS, TBS, 2 PBS, UPN, WB, WMEX & maybe WGOD.

I'd say the majority of Americans in this day and age have either cable or satellite.

Personally, I've got digital cable with the HBO package. I dunno, maybe 200 channels.

Edit: Oh yeah, I forgot that the major networks now also have seperate High Def channels that broadcast over the air. For example, the ABC affiliate WSB has two channels over the air, one in HD.

It IS god. It changed the way I watched tv. We don't have tivo proper in Canada, but we can rent/buy DVRs. I used to rent one in ON for a cheap monthly rate, but when I came out west they weren't familiar with the concept of "renting" and the cable company wanted us to buy a godawful Motorola unit for about $900. So I am sans-DVR now and it sucks because once you have it, there's no going back.

Seriously? Goddamn, why do we have to be stuck in the 50s while the rest of the world moves on into the 21st century? The closest we have to tivo are the still-very-expensive DVRs

The only thing I don't like about TiVOs right now, and its not even the machine, its the networks, is that they are being more savvy with start times on shows. I've noticed many get bumped a few minutes prior to actual start times just to throw off users.
