I remember the liner notes contained the phrase "For River", meaning I assume the album was dedicated to River Phoenix. Ween's Chocolate and Cheese album came out at about the same time and was "Dedicated in loving memory to John Candy".

Somehow Ween managed to sound more sincere.

Though Stipe actually was friends with Phoenix and I doubt Gene knew Candy.
