l just left the Cheesecake Factory for my boss' goodbye luncheon thing. One of her friends was there and he made her a mix. On the way home from lunch she and my other coworker (one who told me KC Accidental by BSS was irritating and annoying, yet listens to Kelly Clarkson and is going to her concert soon) listened to the mix tape. THere were some obvious ones, like "Let's Get It On" and "Start it Up". Then there were some that I had absolutely no idea who they were.

I started to get fearful that I was becoming like my parents(i.e. ever so gradually getting less and less aware of the real world around them). I had to reassure myself saying, "just because you do not know the artist and song title does not imply that you are losing touch". I had to say, "Joe, you listen to a lot of music. It's not a bad thing to be unaware of the commercial/radio pop out there". I was shocked that one of the songs was by Liz Phair who I thought had some sort of indie cred and the song was AWFUL. Just plain awful.

At any rate, anyone else ever had this feeling? I am a bit socially awkward and so sometimes in social situations I like to feel that I am "fitting in" but I feel so detached when I go somewhere(typically a bar) and those that I am with are all getting into a song and know every lyric and are dancing around like it's the most amazing thing ever created and I am just standing there thinking, "what the fuck is happening right now?"

Maybe I am the only one, but I think I have completely separated myself from being able to communicate about music to the general population without fearing that I am coming across as one of those arrogant indie types.

I have no qualms about not recognizing the latest top 40 turd or remembering who won Idol last year. And I'm 21. I'm just five or six years older than MTV's target market.

So maybe it makes me more of an asshole than you, but I make it known when I have no idea what's playing on Clueless' stereo. In fact, I do so with pride.

I think mr. waltz got what I was getting at. I am not very good with the written word. I tried to explain it, but I am pretty close to worthless. Sorry ayah. I'll still take you on that date, though.

I think that I am even becoming disconnected from the Indie community -- a lot of what the Indie-types are gushshing about simply is not doing it for me.
And a lot of what is doing it for me is being scoffed at by The Kids.

In short, I am becoming my dad.

Odd.

Time for a midlife crisis.

According to my wife, my whole life has been one long midlife crisis.

Calm day, no wind, low humidity, slow high one right down the middle.

At 55 I am interested in music, not in being indie. I like challenging sounds, not what's being played in clubs. I like my brain and heart being touched... or sometimes shoved and roughed up.

I have little time left on the planet, and so have no time for garbage music, ideas or talk.

I don't think music changes much, just everything.

I am your father. You should be so lucky.

Have never and will never give a shit about awareness quotient. I have no idea what's going on 90-percent of the time and don't care.

It's not exceptionally important, usually disappointing, and almost always irritating, anyway.

being out of touch with top40 is the right way to be.

you should know that "exile in guyville" liz phair was awesome, slutty, so hot, and really talented though.

So cool, I can relate, I play what I want to hear, and its because I like it, most people I play it for react positively. Its hard to discern by the cover, and sometimes I get surprises like Cat Power (I was thinking GRRRL power band..so wrong!) my dad actually is a music god to me. Rock on

According to my wife, my whole life has been one long midlife crisis.

I have had a major disconnect from the "indie community" this year - like you, Todd, I guess I'm just not into much of this stuff lately. Very, very little of the stuff that has come out that everyone is so impressed with does anything for me, while all these other release I expected absolutely nothing out of are making me their slaves.

And midlife crisis? My wife just asked me if I was having one last night when I bought the Scorpions' Animal Magnetism. This after spending the last four days enamored of the new Def Leppard covers album (it really IS that fun!) Midlife crisis? I don't think so - just gettin' back to some good ol' rock! Tired of the self-obsessed, whiny indie stuff, that's all.

(That said, I also bought the new Jon Auer album and love it too. So . . . I don't know. Scorpions and Jon Auer. Interesting.)
